    عن قلبي المسكين

    Turn the eyelids' arrows away

  2. لا توقظوها جراحا

    أغفى عليها حنيني

    Do not awaken those wounds

    Upon which my longing fell asleep.

  3. ولا تعيدو عذابي

    ولا تزيدوا شجوني

    And do not bring back my torment,

    And do not deepen my sorrows.

  4. فقد بذلت شبابي

    ضحية للعيون

    For I have offered my youth

    As a sacrifice to the eyes.

  5. أما رحمتم حطاما

    ناداكم بالأنين

    Have you not pitied a shattered wreck

    That called to you with moans?

  6. مروعات خطاه

    بين المنى والظنون

    His steps are terror-stricken

    Between hopes and doubts.

  7. يرجو ويخشى هواكم

    ما بين حين وحين

    He hopes for, and fears, your love

    From one moment to the next.

  8. ويبسم الثغر منه

    على فؤاد حزين

    And his mouth smiles

    Over a sorrowful heart.

  9. فإن رأيتم عليه

    مذلة المسكين

    So if you see upon him

    The poor one's abasement,

  10. تبينوها فإني

    غير الدليل المهين

    Discern it, for I am

    Not the abject guide;

  11. وإنما هو حبي

    أفضى بسري المصون

    Rather, it is only my love

    That disclosed my guarded secret.

  12. فلتسمعوه نشيدا

    مجدد التلحين

    So hear it as a song

    With its melody renewed.

  13. في صمته ولغاه

    أثارة من فتون

    In its silence and its chatter

    Is a trace of enchantment.

  14. وفي لحاظي دليل

    على أساي الدفين

    And in my glances is evidence

    Of my buried sorrow.

  15. كتمته وغرامي

    باد كصبح مبين

    I concealed it, while my passion

    Is plain as a clear dawn.

  16. يراه كل البرايا

    في خفة المستهين

    All creatures see it,

    With the levity of the heedless,

  17. مخاطرا بحياة ملأى

    بشتى الفنون

    Risking a life filled

    With many kinds of art.

  18. فإن أردتم بقائي

    ردوا سهام الجفون
