Neither rejection grieves me nor meeting you brings me joy.

For I am not as you once knew me.

So neither do the warbling nightingales captivate me

at dawn, if they sing upon a bough,

nor do the flowers, when dew has moistened them,

inspire poetry in me or enchant me with their beauty.

Nor am I one to be lured by a glimmer

of union, nor does estrangement shatter me.

For I have forgotten the sweetest of days,

just as I have made myself forget the sighs that torment me.

    I have forgotten the love and resentment that once were;

my homeland's aspirations have drawn me away from them!

My soul is its ransom, if sacrifice is spoken of.

Indeed, suffering for whatever exalts it brings me joy.

My soul shall never know despair, and youth is a hand

that supports me when time's calamities assail me.

So, sons of my homeland, your happiness lies in knowledge,

and ignorance holds nothing but grievous ordeals.

So make the West aware of the East's benefactions.

Drive the misguided from the homelands, and shun

whoever has shattered unity through ambitions and strife.
