  1. ليته يعرف الملل

    دائم الخفق لم يزل

    If only it knew weariness—

    ever throbbing, it has never ceased.

  2. هده الهجر فانبرى

    يقتل اليأس بالأمل

    Separation wore it down, so it rose

    to slay despair with hope,

  3. مذ وعدت اللقاء في

    عاجل يسبق الأجل

    since you promised a meeting in

    the near future, before life's appointed end.

  4. هل تناسيت ليلنا

    إذ دفناه في القبل؟

    Have you chosen to forget our night,

    when we buried it in kisses?

  5. أم تناسيت حبنا

    عندما لاح وأستهل؟

    Or have you chosen to forget our love,

    when it shone forth and began?

  6. أم تجاهلت عاشقا

    بالضنى جفنه أكتحل؟

    Or have you ignored a lover

    whose eyelid wore wasting sickness as kohl?

  7. أم تغاضيت عن فتى

    وتسرعت؟ لم تسل

    Or did you turn a blind eye to a young man

    and act in haste? You did not ask

  8. عن أمانيه في الهوى

    ولياليك في الملل

    about his hopes in love

    and your nights of weariness.

  9. إنه عارف بها

    إن تجاهلت أو جهل

    Indeed, he knows them,

    even if you ignore him or he goes unrecognized.

  10. أنت أدرى بحاله

    وهو أدرى بما حصل

    You know his condition best,

    and he knows best what happened.

  11. كل ما فات يرتجى

    لو سلمنا من الزلل

    All that has passed may still be hoped for,

    if we remain free of missteps.

  12. فلنعد ولتعد بنا

    سنة الحب في الأول

    So let us return, and let return with us

    the tradition of love in ages past.
