I bade farewell to the days of lush spring,

And buried my hopes and the inspiration of my thoughts.

And buried alive the heart's remembrance of youth,

And shook the poet's imagination from my mind.

    ولى الغرام مع الحبيب الغادر

    There is no love while treacherous betrayal surrounds it;

Passionate love departed with the treacherous beloved.

She is a thirsty rose, and I watered her,

When rain grew scarce for her, with the water of my eyes.

    I awakened her—rather, I fashioned her in a mold

From the light of my hopes and the beauty of my feelings.

And granted her a heart her peers

Could scarcely win, tending her with pure love.

I did not know, when I watered and tended her,

That I would be repaid with brazen ingratitude.

O heart, let not what you squandered sadden you—

Of your love, faithful to a bygone pledge.

    إن الكريم ليبتلى بالماكر

    Rather, let not time terrify you with its guile;

Indeed, the noble are surely tested by the schemer.

Was that affection anything but a deception,

Beguiling, offered freely by a wicked one?

How much friendship and love you gave,

And reaped what one bereft of insight reaps.

So hold yourself above being tormented,

And view the past through a scoffer's eye.

For love is what turns your aim away from passion

That is false, like the whims of the deserting pretender.
