أَكَادُI almost أَشُكُّdoubt فيin نَفْسِيmyself لأَنِّيbecause I
أَكَادُI almost أَشُكُّdoubt فيكَin you وأَنْتَand you مِنِّيpart of me
I almost doubt myself, because I
Almost doubt you, though you are part of me.
يَقُولُsay النَّاسُthe people إنَّكَthat you خِنْتَbetrayed عَهْدِيmy covenant
وَلَمْand did not تَحْفَظْpreserve هَوَايَmy love وَلَمْand did not تَصُنِّيsafeguard me
People say that you have betrayed my covenant,
And have neither preserved my love nor safeguarded me.
وَأنْتَand you مُنَايَmy hopes أَجْمَعُهَاall of them مَشَتْwalked بِيwith me
ِإلَيْكَto you خُطَىsteps الشَّبَابِyouth المُطْمَئِنِّconfident
And you are all my hopes; I was carried
To you by the steps of confident youth.
وَقَدْand indeed كَادَalmost الشَّبَابُyouth لِغَيْرِwith no عَوْدٍreturn
يُوَلِّيturns away عَنْfrom فَتَىًa young man فيin غَيْرِlack of أَمْنِpeace
And youth had almost, never to return,
Turned away from a young man without peace.
وَهَاand here أَنَاI فَاتَنِيpassed me by القَدَرُfate المُوَالِيfavorable
بِأَحْلاَمِwith dreams الشَّبَابِyouth وَلَمْand did not يَفُتْنِيpass me by
And here I am: kindly fate has passed me by
With youth's dreams—yet has not passed me by.
كَأَنَّas though صِبَايَmy youth قَدْalready رُدَّتْwere restored رُؤاهُits visions
عَلَىupon جَفْنِيmy eyelid المُسَهَّدِsleepless أَوْor كَأَنِّيas though I
As though my youth's visions had been restored
To my sleepless eyelid—or as though
يُكَذِّبُcalls liars فِيكَabout you كُلَّall النَّاسِthe people قَلْبِيmy heart
وَتَسْمَعُand hears فِيكَabout you كُلَّall النَّاسِthe people أُذْنِيmy ear
My heart calls everyone a liar about you,
And my ear hears everyone speak of you.
وَكَمْand how often طَافَتْcircled عَلَيَّover me ظِلاَلُshadows شَكٍّdoubt
أَقَضَّتْdisturbed مَضْجَعِيmy bed وَاسْتَعْبَدَتْنِيand enslaved me
And how often shadows of doubt have circled over me,
Disturbing my rest in bed and enslaving me.
كَأَنِّيas though I طَافَcircled بِيaround me رَكْبُcaravan اللَيَالِيthe nights
يُحَدِّثُspeaks عَنْكَabout you فِيin الدُّنْيَاthe world وَعَنِّيand about me
As though the caravan of nights had circled around me,
Speaking throughout the world of you and me.
عَلَىyet أَنِّيthat I أُغَالِطُdeceive فِيكَabout you سَمْعِيmy hearing
وَتُبْصِرُand sees فِيكَin you غَيْرَother than الشَّكِّdoubt عَيْنِيmy eye
Yet I deceive my hearing about you,
And my eye sees in you something other than doubt.
وَمَاand not أَنَاI بِالمُصَدِّقِone who believes فِيكَabout you قَوْلاًa word
وَلَكِنِّيbut I شَقِيـتُhave suffered بِحُسْنِthrough the goodness of ظَنِّيmy opinion
And I am not one to believe a word about you,
But I have suffered for thinking well of you.
وَبِيand within me مَمَّاfrom what يُسَاوِرُنِيbesets me كَثِـيرٌmuch
مِنَof الشَّجَـنِsorrow المُؤَرِّقِsleep-disturbing لاَdo not تَدَعْنِيleave me
And within me, from what besets me, is much
Of sorrow that keeps me awake; do not leave me
تُعَذَّبُis tormented فِيin لَهِيبِthe flame of الشَّكِّdoubt رُوحِيmy soul
وَتَشْقَىand suffers بِالظُّنُـونِfrom suspicions وَبِالتَّمَنِّيand from longing
With my soul tormented in the flame of doubt,
And made wretched by suspicions and longing.
أَجِبْنِيanswer me إِذْnow that سَأَلْتُكَI have asked you هَلْis it صَحِيحٌtrue
حَدِيثُthe talk of النَّاسِthe people خُنْتَyou betrayed؟ أَلَمْdid you not تَخُنِّيbetray me
Answer me, now that I have asked you: is it true—
What people say? Have you betrayed me? Have you not betrayed me?
