The reproachers ask me what I desire,

And you, throughout time, are the utmost of my desire.

So if they persist in reproach and overstep their bounds,

Then I will not heed a reproacher's rebuke.

Do they not know that I am languishing because of you,

And that this heart of mine is not sober?

And that I drink remembrance as wine,

Drinking it again in my evening or my morning?

Has passion, then, left in me any power

To forsake you, O lady of the sash?

And has coquetry left any path

To forgetfulness, or anything that can erase love?

So be content and rejoice, for the heart is a fortress

    Which mighty weapons fortify.

For in loving you I have found my sickness,

Just as I have found my solace in it.

For in your bewildered glances lies my torment,

And in them lies the secret of my healing from my wounds.

And in meeting you lie great hopes,

For of all the worlds, you are my cup and my wine.
