ما شئت من شوق به تسهيد

ما شئت من شوق به تسهيد

And the heart would have smiled—the heart you watered

And the heart you quenched

With whatever longing you wished, longing that keeps it sleepless—

Would have smiled at whatever longing it wished

حرصا عليك وأنت في أحشائه

حرصا عليك وأنت في أحشائه

قبس يشب هيامه ويزيد

قبس يشب هيامه ويزيد

Out of concern for you, while within its depths you are

Eager for you while you dwelt within it

A spark that kindles its passion and intensifies it.

A burning ember flaming and glowing ever brighter

والنار تعشق إن تغب فإذا دنت

والنار تعشق إن تغب فإذا دنت

بك فر من رمضائها الموؤود

بك فر من رمضائها الموؤود

And fire is loved when you are absent; but when it draws near

For fire loves to roar when you're gone, but when you draw near

With you, the one buried alive flees its scorching heat:

It flees from its ferocity, now subdued

قلب به مثواك يا من تيمت

بهواه أنفاس لها تصعيد

A heart where you dwell, O you who have enthralled

A heart that you dwell in, o you whom it adores

Through love of you, breaths that rise in sighs.

With breaths that forever rise for you

ولعل أنفاس الربيع تعيده

ولعل أنفاس الربيع تعيده

وترد سيرته منى فيعود

وترد سيرته منى فيعود

And perhaps the breaths of spring will revive it,

And perhaps the breaths of spring will restore it

And hopes will restore its former state, so it will return.

And return its ways to me, and so it will come back

وإليك مرجعه وأنت بداية

وإليك مرجعه وأنت بداية

لولاك لم يبعث لها ترديد

لولاك لم يبعث لها ترديد

And its return is to you, and you are the beginning;

And return to you, for you are its beginning

Without you, no echo of it would arise.

Without you no echo would resound for it

إني وربك في هواك موحد

إني وربك في هواك موحد

إن كان عندك في الهوى توحيد

إن كان عندك في الهوى توحيد

Indeed, by your Lord, I am a monotheist in my love for you,

I and your Lord are united in love for you

If, in your eyes, there is monotheism in love.

If there is unity in love, it is with you

أشدو بذكرك والغرام يسوقني

أشدو بذكرك والغرام يسوقني

لنهاية في الحب وهي بعيد

لنهاية في الحب وهي بعيد

I sing in remembrance of you, and passion drives me

I sing your praises and love leads me

Toward an end in love, and it lies far away.

To an endless summit of affection so far away

فاحفظ ودادي إنه أغلى الذي

فاحفظ ودادي إنه أغلى الذي

يفنى فؤاد دونه ويبيد

يفنى فؤاد دونه ويبيد

So safeguard my affection: it is the dearest thing

So keep my affection, for it is the dearest thing

For whose sake a heart wastes away and perishes.

That would perish without you and fade away
