When you looked at me yesterday, turning away,
When I looked at you yesterday frowning,
amid the crowds, with your doubtful glance,
Among the crowds with your doubtful gaze,
وجرتand flowed علىupon شفتيكyour lips بسمةa smile حائرof someone bewildered
ماsomewhere بينbetween شبهa semblance of رضاapproval وشبهand a semblance of عتابreproach
and a bewildered smile played upon your lips,
And an ambiguous smile, between approval and reproach,
somewhere between a semblance of approval and a semblance of reproach,
Crossed your lips,
أبصرتI saw فيin عينيكyour eyes عمريmy life كلهall of it
وعرفتand I knew أنيthat I قدalready أضعتI squandered شبابيmy youth
I saw my whole life in your eyes,
I saw my whole life in your eyes,
and knew I had squandered my youth.
And knew I had wasted my youth,
ورأيتand I saw نفسيmyself فيin الحياةlife وضيعهاits lowly one
أشكوI lament إغترابيmy estrangement فيin نديthe gathering of صحابيmy companions
And I saw myself as life's lowly one,
And saw myself wasting my life,
lamenting my estrangement in my companions' gathering.
Complaining of estrangement to my dear friends.
وهتفتand I cried out بيto myself:منwho أنتyou؟ لماwhen أنكرتfailed to recognize

And I cried out to myself, 'Who are you?' when
And you cried: "Who are you?" When my eyes
my eyes failed to recognize me, my skin still tender.
Failed to recognize my own face, bowed down.

And I found myself meeting people, as though I were
And I found myself spurning the world, as if
one of them only in illusion and a mirage's gleam.
I was deluded by a mirage.
وسمعتand I heard قلبيmy heart فيwithin الضلوعthe ribs معاتبيreproaching me
بوجيبهwith its throbbing ياO صفوةchoicest of الأحبابthe loved ones
And I heard my heart within my ribs reproaching me
And I heard my heart in my ribs reproaching me
with its throbbing, O choicest of loved ones.
For its aridity, O essence of loved ones!
ولمستand I felt فيin الأجفانthe eyelids وكفthe trickling of مدامعيmy tears
كالجدولlike a stream المترقرقrippling المنسابgently flowing
And I felt my tears trickling within my eyelids,
And I felt with my eyelids the palm of my tears
like a rippling, gently flowing stream.
Flowing down ceaselessly like a murmuring brook.
ورجعتand I returned للمحرابto the prayer niche أنشدI seek عزلتيmy solitude
لكنbut خيالكyour image كانwas فيin محرابيmy prayer niche
And I returned to the prayer niche, seeking my solitude,
And I returned to my prayer niche to chant my solitude
but your image was in my prayer niche.
But your image was in my niche.

Where is escape, when away from you, then back to you,
Where can I flee, "And from you, then to you I hasten"
I strive? And in loving you, I suffer what I suffer.
And I have no escape from your love, and no escape.
