And they unjustly exposed you

To the vicissitudes of misfortune!

أنت كم دافعت عنهم

How often you defended them

With proud defiance and stubborn resolve.

Yet they treacherously cast you

Into grievous calamities.

At the pettiness of humankind.

To safety and right guidance,"

They drew back from you and went astray

In the labyrinths of darkness.

I have indeed wished to rise

عن غوايات الفساد

يا فؤادي لا تلُمني

Above the temptations of corruption.

O my heart, do not blame me;

Glory alone is my aim.
