Alas, you are the one who squandered my days.

You forgot my love, my longings, and my dreams.

You swept over me like a raging wind, toying

with all that my art and inspiration had built.

That beauty I nurtured for a time

still grows green in my heart and my illusions.

Time was serene for us, and the hours were smiling

on us; through them, my life and days grew sweet.

Did you not sip from my cup a fragrant love

that perfumed my pages and my pens?

Loving you has worn my heart down, O my tormentor,

so I returned from it with my pains and ailments!

You laughed at me while my longings were ablaze,

and you did not hear my songs and melodies.

Your five years, O my life, keep me sleepless,

and have prolonged my torments and pains.

And the advisers came, each warning me:

that my shackles should not remain around my feet.

And how often I rebelled, as thoughts carried me

on two wings of light and darkness.

    She said, reproaching me: “You keep no pledge;

so bear the passionate longing of one lovesick and thirsty!

I would give my life for you! Could you not live remembering

that meeting, with its longings and dreams?

O you for whom I preserved my love and affection,

and guarded it with enduring, lofty passion,

O you who cast me into sighs that burn me,

O you who made an art of humiliating and subjugating me,

if you wish, then find relief from me without regret,

O my soul's desire, O you who sold my days!

And write poetry about someone else, reciting it—

and how often you made an art of loving and honoring me!”

O Lord, what recourse have I? Love is my destiny,

it drags me against my will by a bleeding wrist.

O Lord, I have guarded this love, seeking your reward,

without transgressions, without sin or iniquities.

I have returned, my strength spent, while passion carries me

with remorse, from year to year.
