كيفhow؟ هلcan ...? يُنسىbe forgotten وقدwhile already أولاكentrusted to you أمرَهhis affairs !
كيف؟ هل يُنسى وقد أولاك أمرَه !
وand إِذَاwhen غنىhe sang الهوىlove ، لوَّعتyou tormented شِعرَهhis verse
و إِذَا غنى الهوى ، لوَّعت شِعرَه
How? Can he be forgotten, when he entrusted his affairs to you?
And when he sang of love, you filled his verse with anguish.
قدalready أمرتyou commanded القلبthe heart أنْto يَنْسىforget حبيباًa beloved
قد أمرت القلب أنْ يَنْسى حبيباً
مُدنفاًgravely ill بالحبwith love ، لَاnot يَنشُدُseeks غَيْرَهُother than it
مُدنفاً بالحب ، لَا يَنشُدُ غَيْرَهُ
You have commanded the heart to forget a beloved,
Gravely ill with love, seeking nothing else.
كَبُرgrew great الحبlove الذيwhich غنَّىhe sang لهfor it
كَبُر الحب الذي غنَّى له
يومthe day أعطاكgave to you ، وأعطىand gave ألفa thousand مرَّهtimes
يوم أعطاك ، وأعطى ألف مرَّه
The love he sang for grew great
On the day he gave to you, and gave a thousand times,
وتهادىand glided gently بينamid أحلامdreams المنىwishes
وتهادى بين أحلام المنى
ناشراًspreading فيin رائعwondrous الأجواءthe air عطرهhis fragrance
ناشراً في رائع الأجواء عطره
And glided amid dreams of hope,
Spreading his fragrance through the wondrous air.
أفلاwill you not, then? تبكينyou weep مَنthe one who أَمْسَىhas come to be وقدwhile already
أفلا تبكين مَن أَمْسَى وقد
هَّهunclear; perhaps 'wore him down' الشوقlonging ، وقَدْand already بَلْبَلَbewildered فَكْرَهُhis thoughts !!
هَّه الشوق ، وقَدْ بَلْبَلَ فَكْرَهُ !!
Will you not weep for him, now that
Longing has [worn him down] and bewildered his thoughts?
هلhave ...? تناسيتِyou deliberately forgot ، حبيباًa beloved صادقاًsincere
هل تناسيتِ ، حبيباً صادقاً
طاهرpure الذيلthe hem ؟ وَمَاand how أَرُوعَwondrous طُهْرَهُhis purity !!
طاهر الذيل ؟ وَمَا أَرُوعَ طُهْرَهُ !!
Have you deliberately forgotten a sincere beloved,
Pure of hem—and how wondrous his purity!
عاشhe lived للأحلامfor dreams يَبْنِيbuilding عُشَّهhis nest ،
عاش للأحلام يَبْنِي عُشَّه ،
ومعand with الأحلامdreams قدْalready ضَيَّعwasted عمرهhis life
ومع الأحلام قدْ ضَيَّع عمره
He lived for dreams, building his nest,
And with dreams he wasted his life.
فاذكريهso remember him .. وَاذْكُرِيand remember مَاwhat قَدْhas مَضَىpassed
فاذكريه .. وَاذْكُرِي مَا قَدْ مَضَى
ردديrepeat فيin مسمعthe hearing الأيامthe days ذكرهhis remembrance
رددي في مسمع الأيام ذكره
So remember him, and remember what has passed;
Keep his memory echoing in the hearing of the days.
