Blame me, but do not keep the wounds open.

And reproach me, for reproach brings relief.

And be forgiving, just this once,

For forgiveness is the noble person's nature.

    If your sorrow still remains,

Then the winds will scatter sorrow away.

Or if it hurt you that I

    Did not come that morning.

I did not forget, nor was it

My intention to stay away and depart.

    ما كان من طبعي المِزاح

    I was never frivolous;

Joking was not in my nature.

    I never once disavowed

The covenant of love and goodness.

You made me drink the cup of affliction,

And left my eye to weep.

Indeed, I gave you my beating heart,

As a shield to protect you from spears.

So you made me a bird that yearns

For you, with its wing clipped.

    فهل ترى فيه انشراح؟

    This is my loyalty in verse;

So do you find relief in it?

So forgive me, for my excuse is clear.

O dear friend, what has gone is gone!
