    Whenever I see her,

each time, the flame grows fiercer.

So have mercy on me, for

my heart has grown weary of sobbing.

So with what shall I shield myself

    when the beloved turns cold?

    Forgetfulness and hatred?

    If only this would respond!

    For all my weaponry

has no target it can hit.

    And stratagems have proved

    that they always fail.

    They all fall, struck

    down by the beloved's rejection.

it has a share within the heart.

    It wearies the lover until

he stays awake all night, despondent.

He stays awake all night, sick,

    explaining the beloved's rejection.

    إنــــنــي  دومــــا غــريــب

    I confess—I spoke of my love;

indeed, I am always a stranger.

What if I had flattered her?

Then I would have been a refined man.

    Smile, O mouth—come now!

And leave the beloved's abandonment behind.

A life of sorrow amid gloom

is a life of humiliation without joy.

And listen, O heart, to one who calls,

    denouncing the dreadful injustice,

    hoping in every sorrow

that you say, ‘Leave off throbbing,

    and delight in cheerfulness,

so you may taste a spacious life.’

    a sweet and tender melody

longing made me sob still more.

    تـــارةً  يــضــفي  الــعجيب

    at times bestowing wonders;

    and often it disguises itself:

    Ah—a disquieting devil!
