معذبtormented والوجدand longing قدindeed أفناهhas consumed him
Will you not have mercy on a yearning lover who loves you,
Will you not have mercy on a yearning lover who loves you?
Tormented, whom passion has consumed?
He is tormented, and longing has consumed him.

He spends his night and day amid his sighs,
He spends his night and day in moaning.
And distance and desertion have worn him away.
And distance and estrangement have worn him down.
أشفقhave pity عليهon him ولاand do not تكنbe ذاpossessed of قسوةcruelty

Take pity on him; do not be cruel,
Have pity on him, and do not be cruel.
And ever enfold him in what he longs for.
And always shower him with what he desires.

لمwhy تعملنَّyou work (emphatic)؟ إذنthen لماtoward what يخشاهhe fears it؟؟
For separation harms and humiliates him—
Separation surely harms and humiliates him.
Why, then, would you deliberately do the very thing he fears?
Why, then, do you work toward what he fears?
هلdo تذكرنَّyou remember (emphatic) جلوسكمyour sitting together فيin خلوةseclusion

Do you remember your sitting together in seclusion,
Do you remember your sitting together in seclusion,
In the garden, until you told me, “I love him”?
In the garden, until you told me, "I love him"?

Do not betray the promise made to him, nor his covenants,
Do not break his promise and his pledges.
And remember that time—how sweet it was!
And remember a time—how sweet it was!

If you make his love a spiteful person’s plaything,
If you leave his love a spiteful person's plaything,
One day you will say, “How can I meet him?”
You will say one day, "How can I meet him?"

Indeed, nobility requires, in loving him,
Gentleness toward him—or that you meet him.
Kindness toward him, or that you meet him.

Do not persist in this stubbornness, for it

Makes you drink the bitterness of parting from him, with its anguish.

Return to him, and do not hold your love over him as a favor;
Return to him, and do not count loving him as a favor.
Be true to him in affection; do not forget him.
And be sincere in your affection for him; do not forget him.

O you who deny love in his beloved,
Is this what you had in store for his happiness?
Is this what you secretly intended for his happiness?

You make him drink bitterness from the torment of his cups.

Woe to you, O you who grow intoxicated by his misery!

Hard-hearted toward him, you yearn to be parted from him,
You are cruel to him and long to part from him,
Until he suffers for nearly all that he has bestowed.
Until he suffers most of what he has bestowed.

Had you been among those who show mercy to their lovers,
If you were among those who show mercy to the one who loves them,
You would have shunned what sears him with wasting pain.
You would turn away from what sears him with its anguish.

The aim is always that you should reign supreme
For the aim is always that you respond
Through union, never turning back to seek another.
With reunion; do not turn back to seek anything else.
