They captivate the man of reason until he cannot stir.
They bring an art of enchantment in many hues.
أرهقنthey exhausted خلقاpeople كثيراmany ماnot لهit has عددa number
أرهقن خلقا كثيرا ما له عدد
يصرعنthey bring down أعظمthe greatest منthose who فيهنwith them ولهاناbesotted
يصرعن أعظم من فيهن ولهانا
They have exhausted countless people.
They bring down the greatest of those besotted with them.
يلعبنthey play دوراa role فيin الحياةlife وحينهاand then
يلعبن دورا في الحياة وحينها
يصنعنthey bring about أشنعthe most heinous جرمcrime الناسof humankind أحيانـاsometimes
يصنعن أشنع جرم الناس أحيانـا
They play a role in life, and then
They sometimes bring about humanity's most heinous crime.
ياO مرهقاone worn out فيin حبهنlove for them ومدمناand addicted
يا مرهقا في حبهن ومدمنا
أرفقbe gentle بنفسكwith yourself لاdo not تكنbe عجلانـاhasty
أرفق بنفسك لا تكن عجلانـا
O you, worn out by loving them and addicted to that love,
Be gentle with yourself; do not be hasty.
واصبرand be patient فانfor indeed الصبرpatience فيهin it منافعbenefits
واصبر فان الصبر فيه منافع
وامرحand be merry معwith الأيامthe days دعput aside أشجانــاsorrows
وامرح مع الأيام دع أشجانــا
And be patient, for patience has its benefits.
And be merry through the days; put sorrows aside.
ماnot أنthat صبرتyou endured معذباtormented متصبراًstriving to be patient
ما أن صبرت معذبا متصبراً
إلاexcept انتصرتyou triumphed بحبهنthrough their love وحنــانـاand tenderness
إلا انتصرت بحبهن وحنــانـا
No sooner do you endure, tormented yet striving for patience,
Than you triumph through their love and tenderness.
إنif كنتyou are مفتدياsacrificing yourself لهنfor them ومدand lovesick (first fragment) نفاًlovesick (final fragment)
إن كنت مفتديا لهن ومد نفاً
فاحرصthen take care وحاذرand beware أنthat تكونyou be جبـانـاa coward
فاحرص وحاذر أن تكون جبـانـا
If you sacrifice yourself for them and are sick with love,
Then take care, and beware of being a coward.
إنindeed الجمالbeauty لفتنةsurely a temptation جذابةalluring
إن الجمال لفتنة جذابة
لاnot يستطيعcan لردهاto repel it إنسانــاa human being
لا يستطيع لردها إنسانــا
Beauty is indeed an alluring temptation;
No human being can resist it.
فيهنamong them وردa rose فاتنenchanting ومعطرand perfumed
فيهن ورد فاتن ومعطر
تلقيكshe casts you فيinto أحضانهاher embrace غلبانــاhelpless
تلقيك في أحضانها غلبانــا
Among them is a rose, enchanting and perfumed;
She casts you helpless into her embrace.
ياO وردةrose ذهبيةgolden أحببتهاI loved her
يا وردة ذهبية أحببتها
أبقتshe kept فؤاديmy heart ساهداwakeful سهرانـاsleepless
أبقت فؤادي ساهدا سهرانـا
O golden rose whom I have loved,
She has kept my heart wakeful and sleepless.
لاnot يطعمنَّit shall taste (emphatic) الفرحjoy بعدafter فراقهاparting from her
لا يطعمنَّ الفرح بعد فراقها
ويهيمand it wanders lovesick للقياfor a meeting يريدit wants أمـــانــاsafety
ويهيم للقيا يريد أمـــانــا
It will never taste joy after parting from her,
And it wanders in longing for a meeting, seeking safety.
فالنفسfor the soul هائمةlovesick للوصلfor union راغبةyearning
فالنفس هائمة للوصل راغبة
حتىuntil يتمtakes place لقاءناour meeting إخــوانـاas brothers
حتى يتم لقاءنا إخــوانـا
For the soul is lovesick, yearning for union,
Until we meet as brothers.
Sol 6.1
