He sheathed the sword, weary of being drawn,

and curbed the imaginary horse's desire.

And time strolled gently through his doubt,

    regaining its endurance through endurance.

    أَفْلتَتْ منه لفتةٌ للشَّمالِ

    The colt nickered, a keen-witted poet;

a glance toward the north slipped from him.

And the horizon wheeled on the twin veins of its neck,

the clock's rotation... the crescent's waning.

His palm bridles the colt, and with a palm

he bridles the sigh, dark with questioning.

    His face searched the night within his hands;

it did not find what it could be in the nights,

    among ravenous wolves of ruin

and dark nights of hunger, like she-ghouls.

He stirs up anguish, writhes, and confronts,

advancing, shrinking in doubt, ever shifting.

He spied a glimmer in the lowlands' hall,

he thought it a pearly star from the sky.

He loosed his soul into the ease of mirrors,

and his gaze roamed, peering into the vistas.

Is this Tariq? Or Tarif? And who is this—

the falcon of what was, in bygone years?

What is happening? Do you think we dreamed,

then awoke without love or union?

That is Granada, which drenched me

with bucketfuls of aching and glory.

Her gate still creaks in my ear,

and turns two thousand blades within my heart!

And a maiden—her budding breasts are of my heart's blood,

and my blood reigns in the rose of her cheek.

Her Cordoban companions toyed with me,

and the wine of her rapture was in my mustache.

Do you think she forgets in love's flutter?

Or do you think her naive, uncaring?

Or do you think I turned from myself and her,

so she became a poem of sand?

    جَدَّدَ اللَّهْوُ جِدَّهُ ، وهو بالِ

    The question toyed with him and prattled;

play renewed his earnestness, threadbare as it was.

He no longer knew what he intended.

What face for his face, in such exhaustion?

He drinks deep of boredom's water, undiluted,

from cups of limpid, burning thirst.

He said, when the West envisioned an East for him,

and behold, dawn was an ecstasy of the impossible:

O my gazelle, more desirable than the thought of love,

say: when will you relent within me, my gazelle?

He raved and withered, fiercely biting,

    in luminous garments of arrows.

Then behold, a figure sprouting in the wilds,

black of voice, white of outpouring!

He gnaws at life in solitude, and his visions

drive birds of good omen toward the left.

And behold, his mother, who never bore him,

spits the words into the bend of the mountains:

“Weep like women for a kingdom squandered,

which you failed to safeguard like men!”

Silence rumbled, and the crow sang,

and the wolf howled from the lips of coquetry.

Wake from your yesterday; rouse yourself, my beloved.

Many a Granada has gazed askew!

Perhaps the country has become a book,

you are within it a remnant of an ideal!

Perhaps... perhaps—and perhaps it has come to belong

to one slain on its soil, and to occupation.

So leave poetry here, and prepare

to compose the dawn, a white blaze of struggle.

This life is but a poem,

its finest verse is modern and deeply rooted!
