Extinguish your question; the wave of night is murky.

And dawn is held hostage, and time monopolized!

And the wind laments; sorrow flies as ravens

folding space; the star and moon ran liquid!

Extinguish your question: in doubt there is no horizon

toward journeying, nor in conjecture a testing ground!

This deadness grew within our eye sockets,

until, within its lifespan, our lifespan reached its end!

It swallows our coffee amid waking's dusty gusts,

as a trace is swallowed upon the desert's back!

It hammers the house's pillar within us; from our hand

it scatters the sun and takes yesterdays captive!

Whenever the silken lute grows grassy with fragrance

in songs, do memories come crowding before you?!

Then they draw tears from you, tender, raining letters upon

the gazelle's wound and a treacherous path; you sin

    تغرَّبَتْ حِقَبًا، واجتثَّها الصَّبِرُ!

    against the palms, which make their planter's hand weep;

they wandered abroad for ages, and bitter aloe uprooted them!

What paralyzed your hand in its farthest planting grounds

has paralyzed your heart; the world is desire and vicissitudes!

What do you want, with truth's color snatched away

from your eyes, and falsehood's color flourishing?!

What do you want? The ink's blend is questions

famished, and answers like a spreading drought?!

What do you want? The ink's blend is no language

from life, nor are the rain's gentle showers rain?!

O you who, when the wind made you read her Yusuf,

closed over the book of the breast, remembering!

    ماءُ الطَّوَايَا دمي ، يصفو ويَنْكَدِرُ!

    You closed over the well's lips, drinking me;

the water of stone-lined wells is my blood, clearing and clouding!

What do you want, when all the poised steeds have

something of horses' pride? O you, do not flee!

Remove your mask, then dream of what has been hidden

for you by the date-clusters—delights you hasten toward!

And read your fate, O you, in whose every limb

the ship-nails have wheeled against a night!

You are your fate: no ideals have slumbered for it

over vendettas, nor have the early mornings faltered over it!

How often do the slaughter-beasts within you comply with their butcher?!

Why do the islands within you not agree with one another?!

Your night-journey bears within its coffin images,

green with love, ardently loving—O, how lovely the images!

They weep for you in secret, you alive and they dead:

My blood, hearing and sight are a disgrace upon you!

The martyr's spirit is seen as a graceful enchantress,

while your ugly spirit remains within you, killing itself!

It is not counted among the living, should news arise

upon the lips, nor is it reckoned among the dead!

You have defied description: what are you on a journey

for which bridges are built upon you from your bones?!

And you, in the markings of those who stay, puffed up

like a bustard fluffing a wing shattered by terror!

If a hawk attacks the weak birds' mother, up leaps

a weak bird's chick onto other chicks, playing the eagle!

Or if the lord of a usurped neighborhood tyrannizes in a country,

the gallant man goes by night against the neighboring women, seeking revenge!

No one was ever so abased before the world and its dweller

as one abased with the earth and humankind within him!

Nor rested, at morning in time's prime,

one who rested while the chronicles passed him by!

Make your uvula eloquent, or inarticulate; grown old are

all the lanterns—no oil, no sparks!

Neither prose raises the dead in their graves, shaking free

of the dust, nor this poetry and its lessons!

Give your tongue pillars, or set it free: no language

to which the Bedouins' virtues have returned will shatter!

Never turn back; a stretch of night-travel is a stone

with which a tongue may pelt you, or a glance may strike!

Hem in your horse—may the horses never be abased! Tomorrow

your turn will come; the butcher is waiting!

But behold, the revolution of creation in my body—

how often it awakens, and surahs rise around it!

Is there no dream from you for us that shakes our hands,

save extinction, save lamentation and gloom?!

All defeats, beneath their frailest banners,

are defeat of the self, as long as thoughts revolve around it!

What do you say—when? The poem is weary, and no

longer does the road endure the ceaseless journeying!

This is your speech in the age-old summer: how often

night's ears of grain have summered, filled with Tatars!

O driver of pale camels, these camels of ours are worn out

from dizziness, wringing themselves against the ages!

O driver of pale camels, I cannot see! Yet I see

in your voice a mirage, floating up, then descending!

What do you say, I wonder: "The distance is foam,

the path is smiling, and the rain pours down?!"

What do I say: "The swords are blood,

honor is a pearl, and the army is victorious?!"

What do I say here? If you wish, then I would say:

"The turn will not come; the butcher is dying."

    ما دُمْتَ نحنُ فما للجزرِ مزدجَرُ!

    But behind him are a thousand upon my shoulder;

so long as you are we, nothing restrains the slaughter!

Gather your scattered fragments: night's face is murky,

morning is held hostage, and time monopolized!

And read your fate, O you, in whose every limb

the ship-nails have soared against a dawn!

Indeed, its dweller is utterly abased before the world—

one once abased, with earth and humankind within him!

Rise, pick yourself up as a young man, and strike your path. Rise!

The years' storm blazes with longing's flash!

Rise, pick yourself up; the myths of visions have fused

with the surging blood: they mend it, and it tangles!

Rise, O giant; draw forth your footsteps and say:

"In the face of this blackness: the sea and the journey!"

O Cordoban women of what is to come, I came tomorrow,

and did not find you; I shall come, and love is sight!

    فادخلْ، عليكَ سلامُ الله، يا عُمَرُ!

    O al-Aqsa Mosque: peace has drawn near;

enter, then—God's peace be upon you, O Umar!
