To Khartoum after exile
And after youth's sweetness has worn away.
And after the wear of glorious youth

A stranger in my homeland; there will fade away
An exile in my country I shall perish
My mirage, a stranger in its open wastes.
A mirage in its prairies my exile

And I preferred the book over a friend

Who sees me with sorts of lies

And I befriended the book where emerges
The brow of God amid the fearsome darkness.
The forehead of God in the fearful darkness
