While Dara's son stood unyielding upon the throne.

We drove them out, with Malik among us,

Lord of the Azd and foremost of conquerors.

We filled the land with bright swords and spears,

We remained among them as long as we remained,

Masters who did not rule arrogantly.

We urged onward the bird of good fortune, and no

We gave sincere counsel to God's people in

Our religion, and to the rightly guided caliphs.

We followed those entrusted with authority in

Their commands, so long as they introduced no innovations.

    Our stance during the discord

Standing firm for God despite those who strayed.

He lived in the time of Marwan's son, amid

    His might and manifest tyranny.

Yet he addressed him only by his name,

Truth illuminates them before those who examine them.

We do not say, 'Ibn Ibad is our exemplar,

Whether he speaks truth or error, and we shall follow.'

Despite what we know of his truthfulness,

Guided by scripture and the Faithful One's established practice.

A lord like the full moon among Ma'wala,

The precinct of kingship and throne of rulers.

Then Shayban the Sufri came with those

The state of al-Yahmad in the second century

Everyone on earth if he so much as appeared.

Then Malik's son, al-Salt, who protected

Rashid then took charge after him,

A man like al-Salt in tending the Muslims.

    Yet the powerful company who

After appointing him despite the resentful.

    'Azzan then took authority, despite

He saw Musa ibn Musa, who at that

And he stretched himself out until meeting the ambush.

They persisted in seeking evil, to

    Attain vengeance befitting the enraged.

The wars of Muhammad ibn Nur al-Najdi

Known among the Omanis as Ibn Bur

They sought Ibn Nur's help; he was at that

Time in Bahrain, under the rulers.

They came to him in haste, with

A clamor of whistling and groaning.

He affected tears at their weeping, hoping

To see clear conquest behind them.

He guided them to al-Mu'tadid's court, the ru-

ler of firm authority in Baghdad.

The ruler welcomed the matter that

The people desired, and they returned successful.

He afflicted them with Ibn Nur as commander,

Exploiting their division to subdue them.

He hurled their own people against them and occupied them,

Afflicting the heartland with manifest torment.

Time exposed its fang to them,

Baring it among its unsuspecting children.

Then the people rose in revolt,

And the usurper departed among the fugitives.

    Yet some among its renegades

Charged at the insurgent, taking him by the right hand.

They restored the usurper crouching upon

Its chest, after fighting the insurgents.

What a disastrous battle it was,

At Dama, amid martyrs and the pierced!

    Nur persisted among them, relentless

    In burning and disgraceful destruction.

    How many rivers he abandoned,

Now a predator's lair in the wilderness!

    And flourishing villages he left

As bare plains where the old crossbred camel stumbled.

Yet God does not neglect, in

His judgment, though He grants people years of respite.

He decreed victory for God's people in

Their land; truth is worthy of victory.

They brought down with spears, from their throne,

The aggressor's governor, and were victorious.

Thus a lofty structure of his collapsed,

A pillar weakened, and no helper prevailed.

The imams appointed in the days of Ibn Bur

O namesake of the Chosen One, rise with guidance!

O descendant of al-Hasan, just and trustworthy!

    واصطلم من خائن الشعب الوتين

    And son of al-Qasim, O Salt, you braved the fire;

Sever the life-vein of the people's betrayer.

    Shepherd God's people, O 'Azzan, O—

Son of the noblest lion, son of the noblest!

    Govern, O Hawari, son of

Mutarrif, with truth among the worlds.

Stand upright, O 'Amr, among mankind,
