were wailing women, tearing every neckline to shreds.

I struck him while the women in litters were behind me and behind him,

with a gleaming Indian-forged sword of pure iron.

a crusher of armored men's skulls, as though it were

a ghada-wood firebrand from a fiercely blazing fire.

أقول له والسيف يعجم رأسه

أنا ابن أنيس فارساً غير قعدد

I say to him, as the sword bites into his head:

'I am the son of Unays—a horseman, not one who hangs back.

أنا ابن الذي لم ينزل الدهر قِدْرَه

رحيب فناء الدار غير مزند

I am the son of one who never took his cooking pot off the fire,

whose house has a spacious courtyard, and who is no miser.'

وقلت له خذها بضربة ماجد

And I said to him, 'Take this blow from a noble man,

an upright monotheist following the faith of the Prophet Muhammad.'

وكنت إذا هم النبي بكافر

سبقت إليه باللسان وباليد

And whenever the Prophet contemplated action against an unbeliever,

I was first to reach him, with tongue and hand.
