The eyes wept, but this is no time for weeping.

Now is the time of cannons and blood.

They bombard an old man unable to walk, so they may rejoice.

Humanity was astonished at such baseness and stupidity.

And when have the wretched missiles shaken

A mountain?! Oh, the misery of cowards!

They killed you, O symbol of steadfastness, for they had seen

A mountain that soared with dignity and defiance.

And they saw you as a river whose guidance quenches the thirst

Of our nation's heroes and every self-sacrificing fighter.

And they saw you as a rebellious star, guiding toward

The path of jihad, honor, and fidelity.

And they saw you as a full moon in pitch-black darkness,

So that our nation might remain without light.

    وَلَئِنْ رَنَوْتَ فَرُعْبُهُمْ كَظِبَاءِ

    And they saw you as a lion: if you roared, they trembled;

And if you gazed, their terror was like that of gazelles.

And they saw you as a spirit that raises the dead from

The grave of humiliation and the abasement of collaborators.

Their treachery was like a whore openly proclaiming

    Chastity, her purity, and modesty.

Treachery was like the stars; you buried it

In the earth when you came with the honorable.

There was singing over the wounds, and here they are,

Dancing over the sorrow of torn limbs.

This life of yours, and then your death, both laid bare

Their nakedness and their depravity, plainly.

Did they not see how abundantly that blood brought forth

A host of martyrs in our land?

How does speech come alive, while

There is no difference between folly and the eloquent?

How does the man unable to walk become a lion in battle,

While our armies are like a sheep in arrogant pride?

How does the unbowed man become torn limbs, annihilated,

So that his death becomes the aspiration of the noble?

O pride of our nation and terror of our enemies,

O you who hurled light at our darkness,

O lion, bidding farewell to our misery,

O you for whom our hearts wept blood,

O you for whom the earth wept like a bereaved mother, and these

Lions of al-Shara weep for you in every quarter.

    يُؤْسِي الجِرَاحَ رَجَاءُ يَوْمِ لِقَاءِ

    The free and unbowed of the world weep for you;

Hope for a day of reunion soothes the wounds.
