Hearken, O mighty lion: learn.
O lion in appearance, learn and pay heed,
And sit upon your haunches, lend your ear, and benefit.
Sit down, lend your ear, and gain advantage.
لِتَغْنَمْso you may gain دُرُوسًاlessons فِيin الصُّمُودِsteadfastness كَأَنَّهَاas though they were
بِلَيْلِin the night of الدُّجَىdarkness بَدْرٌa full moon يُنِيرُshines لِمُسْلِمِfor a Muslim
So you may gain lessons in steadfastness, as though they were
So you may gain lessons in steadfastness, as if they were
A full moon in the darkness of night, shining for a Muslim.
A moon illuminating in the dark night for a Muslim.
ثَبَاتٌsteadfastness يُزَلْزِلُshakes الطُّغَاةَthe tyrants يُذِلُّهُمْhumiliates them

A steadfastness that shakes tyrants and humiliates them;
Firmness that shakes tyrants and humiliates them,
They seek to move firmly rooted mountains with a wrist.
As they attempt to unsettle firm pillars with their wrists.
فَهَذِيfor this is كَامِلْيَاKamilia قَدْindeed أَتَتْhas come بَعْدَafter إِخْوَةٍbrethren
لِتَقْذِفَto cast نُورًاa light يَرْعَبُterrifies الْبَاطِلَfalsehood الْعَمِيblind
For here is Kamilia, who has come after brethren,
So here is Kamelia who has come after brothers
To cast a light that terrifies blind falsehood.
To cast a light that terrifies the blind falsehood.
تُوَاجِهُshe confronts لاdoes not تَلْوِيturn aside قُوَىthe forces of الشَّرِّevil فِيamong الْوَرَىhumankind
كَأُسْدِlike the lions of الشَّرَىal-Shara فِيin الْبَاسِmight لَمْdid not تَتَحَلَّمِshow forbearance
She confronts, without turning aside, the forces of evil among humankind,
She faces without wavering the forces of evil in the land,
Like the lions of al-Shara in might, she showed no forbearance.
Like a lion in war, she is undeterred.
فَأَجْلَتْso she exposed نِفَاقَthe hypocrisy of الْقَوْمِthe people عَرَّتْshe laid bare خِيَانَةًtreachery
فَبَانَso emerged عَدُوُّthe enemy of الْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslims مِنَfrom الْكَمِيhiding
So she exposed the people's hypocrisy and laid treachery bare,
She exposed the hypocrisy of the folk and their treason,
And the Muslims' enemy emerged from hiding.
So the enemy of the Muslims became evident to the obstinate.
فَكَانَso it was شَرِيفًاnoble قِيلَit was said دَوْمًاalways لأَزْهَرٍof al-Azhar
فَصَارَso it became كَرَاسٍseats لِلدِّيَاثَةِfor cuckoldry وَالْفَمِand the mouth
So al-Azhar had always been called 'noble,'
He who was once called noble, said to be from Azhar,
Then it became seats for cuckoldry and the mouth.
Became but a page for wickedness and mouth.
يُحَارِبُhe fights فِيin الإِصْبَاحِthe morning كُلَّevery عَفِيفَةٍchaste woman
وَيُحْيِيand he stays awake through اللَّيَالِيthe nights شَاهِدَwitnessing الْعَهْرِdebauchery يَعْتَمِيhe turns a blind eye
He fights every chaste woman in the morning,
He wages war every morning against each chaste woman,
And stays awake through the nights, witnessing debauchery, turning a blind eye.
And passes the nights attending the spectacles of obscenity intoxicated.
تَرَاهُyou see him كَلَيْثٍlike a lion عِنْدَat ذِكْرِthe mention of نِقَابِهَاher niqab
وَعِنْدَand at الْخَنَاobscenity وَالْفِسْقِand vice أَكْبَرَthe greatest مُنْعِمِbenefactor
You see him like a lion when her niqab is mentioned,
You see him like a lion when her veil is mentioned,
And, where obscenity and vice are concerned, the greatest benefactor.
But with obscenity and corruption he is most indulgent.
وَإِنْand if يُرِدِwish الْكُفَّارُthe unbelievers حَرْبَwar against حِجَابِهَاher hijab
يَصِرْhe becomes لَهُمُfor them سَيْفًاa sword مُقَطِّعَcleaving أَعْظُمِbones
And if the unbelievers seek war against her hijab,
And if the infidels want war against her veil,
He becomes a sword for them, cleaving bones.
He makes for them a sword that cuts the greatest.
وَذَاكَand that الْوَزِيرُthe minister الْغِرُّnaive حَارَبَfought جَهْرَةًopenly

And that naive minister openly fought
And that foreign minister wages open war
The outward signs of God's religion, hurling himself into oppression.
Against the manifest symbols of Allah’s religion immersed in injustice.
أَتَتْبَعْنَdo you women follow? أَزْوَاجَthe wives of النَّبِيِّthe Prophet مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad؟!
أَلاbehold تِلْكَthat woman زَوْجِيmy wife فَاتَّبِعْنَso follow, you women وَأَنْعِمِand be at ease
Do you women follow the wives of the Prophet Muhammad?!
"Should I follow the wives of the Prophet Muhammad?!"
Look, that is my wife: follow her and be at ease.
"Verily, that is my wife, so follow her and enjoy."
وَمُفْتِيهِمُand their mufti حِبُّthe beloved of الْرُّتَارِيRotary نَصِيرُهُمْtheir supporter
وَهَلْand do يَحْتَفِيshow regard الظُّلاَّمُthe oppressors إِلاَّexcept بِمُظْلِمِfor a wrongdoer
And their mufti, Rotary's beloved, is their supporter.
And their Mufti loves appeasers, he is their aide,
And do oppressors show regard for anyone but a wrongdoer?
Does darkness congregate with other than the unjust?
أَلاAh يَاO كَامِلْيَاKamilia كَمْhow greatly تَسُوئِينَyou grieve أُمَّةًa nation
طَغَىran rampant الظُّلْمُoppression حَتَّىuntil ضَيَّعُواthey abandoned كُلَّevery مُكْرَمِhonored person
Ah, O Kamilia, how sorely you grieve a nation!
Oh Kamelia, how much evil you bring upon a nation,
Oppression ran rampant until they abandoned every honored person.
Injustice has spread until they lost all dignity.
فَصَارَتْso it became لِصِهْيَوْنٍfor Zion يَدًاa hand بَلْrather مَدَافِعًاcannons
وَكُلُّand every مُجَاهِدٍfighter for the faith عَدُوٌّan enemy كَمُجْرِمِlike a criminal
So it became a hand for Zion—rather, cannons—
So for Zion they have become a hand and cannon,
And every fighter for the faith is an enemy, like a criminal.
And every mujahid is an enemy like a criminal.
وَصَارَand became بِهَاin it عَبْدُthe servant of الصَّلِيبِthe cross مُكَرَّمًاhonored
وَمَنْand whoever يَرْضَaccepts دِينَthe religion of اللهِGod يُخْزَis disgraced وَيُحْرَمِand is deprived
And within it, the servant of the cross became honored,
And by it the worshiper of the cross is honored,
And whoever accepts God's religion is disgraced and deprived.
And whoever accepts Allah’s religion is disgraced and deprived.
وَلَكِنْand yet لِيَعْلَمْlet know كُلُّevery طَاغٍtyrant وَمُجْرِمٍand criminal
بِأَنَّthat لِدِينِfor the religion of اللهِGod حُرَّthe noblest الضَّيَاغِمِof lions
And yet let every tyrant and criminal know
But let every tyrant and criminal know,
That God's religion has the noblest of lions,
That Allah’s religion has free, proud eagles.
وَأَنَّand that سُيُوفَthe swords of اللهِGod سُلَّتْhave been unsheathed وَأُشْهِرَتْand have been brandished
وَأَنَّand that بِحَارًاseas سَوْفَwill تَجْرِيflow مِنَof الدَّمِblood
And that God's swords have been unsheathed and brandished,
And that Allah's swords have been unleashed and brandished,
And that seas of blood will flow.
And that soon rivers of blood will flow.
وَهَذَاand this نَذِيرٌa warning لاnot خَيَالٌa fancy لِشَاعِرٍof a poet
وَهَذَاand this هُوَit التَّارِيخُhistory فَاقْرَاso read وَأَحْكِمِand master it
And this is a warning, not a poet's fancy,
And this is a warner, not a poet's imagination,
And this is history itself: read, and master it.
And this is history, so read it and judge.
