أَرَىI see الدُّنْيَاthe world بُكَاءًweeping حِينَat the time of عُرْسِa wedding
وَمَهْمَاand whatever غَيَّرَتْshe changes يَوْمِيmy today كَأَمْسِيlike my yesterday
I see the world as weeping at a wedding,
and whatever she changes, my today is like my yesterday.
تَبَسَّمُshe smiles بَعْضَa little حِينٍwhile ثُمَّthen تَأْتِيcomes
جِنَايَتُهَاher wrongdoing لِتُوهِنَto weaken عِزَّpride نَفْسِيmy soul
She smiles for a little while, then comes
her wrongdoing, to sap my soul's pride.
فَذِيfor these لَذَّاتُهَاher pleasures تَلِدُgive birth to الْبَلايَاcalamities
وَذَاكَand that السَّعْدُgood fortune عَاقِبَةٌan outcome لِبُؤْسِof misery
For these pleasures of hers give birth to calamities,
and that good fortune is an outcome of misery.
رُوَيْدَكِrestrain yourself لاno أَبَاfather لَكِfor you فَاعْرِفِينِيso know me
فَإِنَّfor indeed السَّعْدَgood fortune عِنْدِيto me مِثْلُlike نَحْسِيmy ill fortune
Easy now—may you have no father—and know me:
for good fortune, to me, is like my ill fortune.
أَرَىI see الْحُزْنَthe sorrow الَّذِيthat يُدْمِيmakes bleed فُؤَادِيmy heart
عَدُوًّاan enemy لَمْdid not يَرُمْنِseek me لِغَيْرِfor anything but فَرْسِيkilling me
I see the sorrow that makes my heart bleed
as a foe that sought me only to kill me.
فَلاso not أُعْطِيهِI give it مِنْof نَفْسِيmyself نَقِيرًاa speck
وَلاand not يَلْقَىit encounters بِقَلْبِيin my heart غَيْرَanything but حَسِّannihilation
So I give it not a speck of myself,
and in my heart it meets nothing but annihilation.
وَإِنِّيand indeed I إِنْif كُلِمْتُI am wounded مِنَby الْعَوَادِيadversities
يَطِيبُheals الْكَلْمُthe wound ثُمَّthen يَزِيدُincreases بَأْسِيmy courage
And if I am wounded by adversities,
the wound heals, and then my courage grows.
وَمَاand not هَذَاthis لِبَأْسِيbecause of my courage بَلْrather لأَنِّيbecause I
رَضِيتُI accepted قَضَاthe decree of الرَّحِيمِthe Merciful فَزَالَso vanished يَأْسِيmy despair
And this is not through my courage, but because I
have accepted the Merciful's decree, so my despair has vanished.
فَيَاso, O دُنْيَاworld سَأَحْيَاI shall live فِيكِin you حُرًّاfree
أَبِيَّunbowed النَّفْسِin spirit شَانِئَloathing كُلِّevery جِبْسِcoward
So, O world, I shall live free within you,
unbowed in spirit, loathing every coward.
أُوَاجِهُI face مَوْجَكِyour waves الْعَاتِيraging وَإِنِّيand indeed I
لَمُنْتَصِرٌsurely victorious وَإِنْeven if فَارَقْتُI part with رَأْسِيmy head
I face your raging waves, and I
am surely victorious, even if I lose my head.
أَغُوصُI dive بِيَمِّكِinto your sea اللُّجِيِّdeep كَيْمَاso that
أَحُوزَI obtain الدُّرَّpearls أَصْنَعُI fashion مِنْهُfrom them كَأْسِيmy cup
I dive into your deep sea, so that
I may obtain pearls and fashion my cup from them.
أُحَلِّقُI soar فِيin سَمَائِكِyour sky ثُمَّthen أَغْزُوI invade
جِنَانَكِyour gardens وَاضِعًاplacing فِيin الأَرْضِthe earth غَرْسِيmy saplings
I soar in your sky, then invade
your gardens, setting my saplings in the earth.
