    وَالْفَرْحُ يَدْمَى وَالْحَيَاةُ تَهُونُ

    Eid weeps, and joy is sorrowful;

and gladness bleeds, and life loses its worth.

And unbelief cries out throughout all creation:

I will annihilate Ahmad's nation and humiliate it!

And humiliation staggers beneath the burden of a people who have accepted

oppression—when will their hour of honor come?

It cried out among my people: Enough! Have mercy!

Will you not tire of your abasement, so that I may depart?

Are you fish in a sea, for whom, as long as they live,

life in abasement is always secure?!

When you sipped its cup in ecstasy,

you became addicted to it; so it is entrenched in your hearts.

    مَاتَتْ مُرُوءَتُكُمْ فَبِئْسَ الْهُونُ

    It crippled your hearts and destroyed your honor;

your nobility has died—how vile is humiliation!

If a free man rose among you, he would end up slain,

    or a fugitive—or a prisoner: how wretched!

Is that the full moon's reward in a night of deep darkness?!

How wretched a people whose lion is wronged!

And Eid comes every year in sorrow,

until it wished that death would come for it.

I used to clothe this life in joy,

and happiness; I would adorn life's face.

In honor, I would find sacrificial victims among the tyrants

of humankind; they and the sheep were alike.

    شَابَ الدِّمَاءَ عَلَى الْقُلُوبِ يَرِينُ

    In this age, humiliation has become your skin;

it has mingled with the blood and encrusts the hearts.

So you have clothed me in your humiliation and misery,

and it is as though I were all sorrow in this age of abasement.

Can a people ever rejoice whose rulers have grown tyrannical,

while all prostrate themselves and the defiant one is imprisoned?!

Can a people ever rejoice whose enemies have grown tyrannical,

while their masters are themselves prostrate and treacherous?!

Can a people ever rejoice whose blood forms seas,

as cheap as dust, and not a drop precious?!

But if the unyielding rise up, you must know

that I shall return bearing glad tidings and lend my aid.

And if you slay your humiliation, you will find me

with you in spirit; there shall be no parting.

Then, when I come, you will clothe me in honor,

and I shall clothe you in joy—how splendid the hour!

And if the tyrants of humankind become a sacrifice,

my life will return to youth—and so will the faith.

Will that age ever return?! Perhaps

the dream will come true, and abasement will depart.
