Are you a dream from the heights of my dreams?

Are you a phantom from the passion of my illusions?

Are you truly my beloved in life,

Or are you a dream, the most wondrous of dreams?

Have I truly become, in longing, a poet,

Tossed between a garden and a blaze?

Has your absence surpassed the strength of my resolve,

Though I am the bold one, the conqueror of pain?

Am I the one drowning today in the sea of love,

    After swimming in vast seas?

Am I the captive today? May my hand never be freed!

And captivity is a humiliation my passion has come to love.

Oh, if only lovers' lives were like their dream:

They would revel in pleasure and passionate love.

    فَمَآلُهُمْ لِلُبُؤْسِ وَالأَسْقَامِ

    But they are dreams, the dreams of love;

So their fate is misery and sickness.
