أَمِيرَةَO princess قَلْبِيmy heart وَرُوحِيand my soul سَلامْa greeting of peace
رَقِيقٌgentle يَفُوحُexudes شَذًاfragrance لاnot يُرَامْcan be attained
Princess of my heart and soul—greetings,
O princess of my heart and soul, a greeting of peace—
Tender, breathing a fragrance none can match.
Gentle, exuding a fragrance beyond reach.
فَلِلْوَرْدِfor roses have عِطْرٌa fragrance وَحَتْمًاand surely يَزُولit fades
وَلِلشَّوْقِand longing has عِطْرٌa fragrance مِنَfrom الْقَلْبِthe heart دَامْhas endured
A rose has its perfume, yet surely it fades;
For roses have a fragrance, and it surely fades,
But longing bears a perfume from the heart that endures.
While longing has a fragrance from the heart that endures.
وَحِينَand when أَرَاكِI see you كَأَنِّيas though I رُوِيتhave had my thirst quenched
وَمَاand how أَجْمَلَlovely الرِّيَّthe quenching of thirst بَعْدَafter الأُوَامْburning thirst
Whenever I see you, it is as though I have drunk my fill—
And when I see you, it is as though my thirst has been quenched;
How beautiful is quenching after burning thirst.
And how lovely the quenching after burning thirst!
وَمَاand how أَبْأَسَwretched اللَّيْلَthe night حِينَwhen يَطُولit grows long
وَلَيْلِيand my night فِرَاقُكِseparation from you لَيْسَis not الظَّلامْdarkness
How wretched the night when it stretches long;
And how wretched the night when it grows long!
Yet my night is separation from you, not darkness.
And my night is separation from you, not darkness.
وَمَاand how أَرْوَعَsplendid الْفَجْرَthe dawn بَعْدَafter الدُّجَىdeep darkness
وَفَجْرِيand my dawn لِقَاؤُكِmeeting you حُلْمِيmy dream الدَّوَامْpermanence
How glorious the dawn after the deep gloom;
And how splendid the dawn after the deep darkness!
And my dawn is meeting you—my dream is that it last.
And my dawn is meeting you; my dream is for it to last forever.
أَمِثْلِيsomeone like me? يَرَىsees مِنْكِfrom you هَذَاthis الْجَفَاءcoldness
أَهُونُI am worth little عَلَيْكِto you لأَدْنَىover the slightest كَلامْwords
Should one like me meet such coldness from you?
Does someone like me meet with such coldness from you?
Do I mean so little to you, over the slightest word?
Am I worth so little to you over the slightest word?
لَقَدْindeed صِرْتُI have become عِنْدَكِin your eyes دُونَbelow الصِّحَابthe friends
وَقَدْand indeed صِرْتِyou have become عِنْدِيَin my eyes أَغْلَىthe dearest of الأَنَامْall people
I have become, in your eyes, less than your companions,
Indeed, in your eyes I have come to rank below your friends,
While you have become, to me, the dearest of all people.
And yet, in my eyes you have become the dearest of all people.
فَيَوْمٌfor a day تَغِيبِينَyou are absent عَنِّيfrom me سِنُونyears
وَأَنْتِand you لَدَيْكِfor you كَلَيْلٍlike a night يُنَامْis slept through
A day you are absent from me is years,
For one day of your absence from me is years,
While for you it is like a night one sleeps away.
While for you it is like a night slept through.
فَهَلْthen, is there? رَحْمَةًmercy لِلْفُؤَادِfor the heart الْجَرِيحwounded
وَلَوْand even if only نَظْرَةًa glance لَيْسَthere is no فِيهَاin it مَلامْreproach
Will you, then, show mercy to this wounded heart—
Is there, then, any mercy for the wounded heart,
If only with a glance that holds no reproach?
Even if only a glance with no reproach in it?
