مَاذَاwhat سُؤَالُthe questioning النَّاسِof people عَنْabout مُتَرَدَّمِa breach to mend؟
اِحْمِلْcarry هَوَاكَyour passion وَصُلْand charge بِهِwith it وَتَقَدَّمِand advance !!
What is this question people ask about a breach to mend?
What is the people's question about the ruin dweller?
Carry your passion, charge with it, and advance!
Carry your passion and reach it and excel!
فيin الشِّعْرِpoetry كَمْhow many مَعْنىًa meaning جَمُوحٍwild كَامِنٍhidden
فَانْفَذْso penetrate إِلَيْهِto it.. فَقَذْfor it may (apparently فَقَدْ) يَذِلُّyield لِمُلْهَمِto an inspired one
In poetry, how many a wild meaning lies hidden!
In poetry how much raging meaning lies dormant
So pierce through to it; it may yield to one inspired.
So unleash it.. perhaps it will submit to the inspired one
وَالشِّعْرُand poetry والمعنىand meaning غَزَالٌa gazelle نَافِرٌskittish
وَالسِّرُّand the secret فيin الصَّيَّادِthe hunter لاَnot فيin الأَسْهُمْthe arrows!!
And poetry and meaning are a skittish gazelle,
Poetry and meaning are a wary gazelle
and the secret lies in the hunter, not in the arrows!
And the secret is in the hunter not the arrows
مَنْwhoever صَادَcaptured مَعْنىًa meaning أَوْقَعَتْهُensnared it حِبَالُهُhis snares
أَوْلَىmore deserving بِتَقْدِمَةٍof precedence عَلَىover الْمُتَقَدِّمِthe predecessor
Whoever captures a meaning that his snares have caught
Whoever hunted a meaning, his ropes brought it down
is worthier of precedence than the one who came before.
More deserving of an offering than the exceler
يَاO دَارَdwelling of عَبْلَةَAbla قَدْindeed أَتَاكِhas come to you مُتَيَّمٌa love-stricken man

O dwelling of Abla, a love-stricken man has come to you.
O Abela's house, Motayam has come to you
Return his greeting to him, and speak.
Return his greeting and speak
يَاO دَارُdwelling.. عَبْلَةُAbla فَارَقَتْكِhas left you وَخَلَّفَتْand left behind

O dwelling, Abla has left you and left behind
O House.. Abela left you and left
in you her heart and a youthful longing that has not aged.
In you the heart and youthfulness that did not decay
هَرِمَتْshe has aged وَمَاand not هَرِمَhas aged الغَرَامُlove.. وَصَرَّمَتْand she severed

She has aged, but love has not; and she has severed
It decayed, and love did not decay, it aged
a bond, yet the cord of her yearning has not been cut.
Joining.. and the rope of her yearning was not severed
رَحَلَتْshe departed فَأَضْحَىso became كُلُّevery بَيْتٍhouse مُقْفِراًdeserted

She departed, and every house became deserted,
She left so every house became desolate
ruined; she did not set down the camper's staff.
Ruined.. yet she did not cast off the stick of the camper
رَحَلَتْshe departed.. فَعَذْبُso sweet الْمَاءِwater مُهْلٌmolten metal آسِنٌfoul and stagnant
فيin حَلْقِهَاher throat مُرٌّbitter كَطَعْمِlike the taste of العَلْقَمِcolocynth
She departed; sweet water is molten metal, foul and stagnant,
She left.. so the sweetness of water is stale brackish
bitter in her throat as the taste of colocynth.
In her throat bitter like the taste of colocynth
إِنْif مَاever (emphatic) ارْتَدَتْshe donned ثَوْبَthe garment of السَّعَادَةِhappiness مَرَّةًonce

If she donned the garment of happiness even once,
If she ever wore the garb of happiness
time shrouded her happiness in mourning.
Time covered her happiness with mourning

The world gazes at her with a frowning face,
The world frowns at her with a sullen face
baring its teeth, but not in a smile.
Baring its teeth not smiling at her
فَارَقْتِyou left دَارَكِyour dwelling ثُمَّthen رُمْتِyou sought وِصَالَهَاreunion with it

You left your dwelling, then sought reunion with it;
You left your house then sought reunion with it
seeking it is hard for you, daughter of Makhram!
Hard for you is seeking it, daughter of Makram!

No homeland remains to be ransomed, nor a sanctuary
No homeland remains to be ransomed or protected
where one seeking protection can take refuge from calamities.
Sheltering the stricken from disasters
أَوْطَانُنَاour homelands أَطْلاَلُthe ruins of ذِكْرَىthe memory of نِعْمَةٍa blessing

Our homelands are the ruins of a remembered blessing,
Our homelands are ruins of a past blessing
sold at a loss—now is no time for regret.
Sold for pittance.. if only at the time of regret

I have kept weeping since I was born, with tears
I have wept since I was born with tears
eloquent, spilling the blood of a mute dream.
Of wakefulness shedding the blood of silent wisdom
وَالدَّهْرُand time أَبْصَرُthe keenest-sighted مَنْof those whom رَأَيْتَyou have seen إذَاwhen اعْتَدَىit transgresses

And time is the keenest-sighted of all you have seen when it transgresses;
And time is more insightful than you thought if it transgressed
but when it finds guidance or repents of injustice, it goes blind
But if it found guidance or repented from injustice, blind

and loses its way because of it; every oppressor is articulate,
It moans from it.. so every rebel is eloquent
fluent of tongue—how I marvel at a tongue-tied guide!
Tongues.. how strange the mute guide is to me!

Return to yourself before returning to the sanctuary;
Bring yourself before bringing protection to homelands
had you not strayed in love, you would not have regretted it.
Had you not gone astray in passion you would not regret

And stand at the ruins of your heart, and lament
Stop at your heart's ruins and mourn
your love before mourning the dwellings, Umm al-Haytham.
The homelands before your love O mother of Haitham

And weep for a love whose waywardness emptied your heart
And cry for a passion whose deviation emptied your heart
of gain, then cast it headlong into loss.
From profit but plunged it into loss

Do not seek rest.. there is no homeland
homeland apart from your blazing heart.

The house is an illusion in your time, deceiving
and the traces and ruins are sheer imagining.
The outline and ruins are pure imagination

Saddle up for your heart, and alight there.
Head with your tents to your heart and descend
How noble a campsite the heart is—may you be ransomed!
May the heart be ransomed - from you who camp

And take the people's hands toward their hearts
for bewilderment lies in minds, not in landmarks.
Lost are the minds not the landmarks
