Ah, O winds that shake the sail,

And spread fear over the one full of tumult,

Is it not time for the tormented one to rest,

And the ships to anchor and toss no more?!

So I lower my eyelids, slowly—a little,

Lightly, I slip into their shade,

And lodge my dream between your eyes,

Beneath the eyelids, and above the lashes.

And cast onto the bank of this little river

And the Kawthar of this weary heart

The aches of illusions of the agonies of the days

Of a slender, delicate, anguished stem.

I seek the evening that kohl-darkens these

    Lashes—at ease, generous, enraptured.

And I frequent this tavern of smiling mouths,

    Dusky-lipped, soft, fragrant, moist.

I revisit my yesterday and rend what lies between

My heart and your heart—all the veils.

I probe this clarity, this purity,

The fragrance, the spring, the gardens, the wonder.

    O my night—Layla is the soul's harbor,

And its expanse, its ember, the flame,

And its wine, its hiding place, and my exile

Among the stars and above the clouds.

    Princess of this vast expanse,

And the passion of this clamorous heart.

I yearn for the stillness of confiding, for

A spreading tree of shadows and sweet draughts.
