أبَاO father of حَسَنHasan ذَكَّرتَنَاyou reminded us العَهدَthe bond والإِخَاand brotherhood
أبَا حَسَن ذَكَّرتَنَا العَهدَ والإِخَا
وَعَصراًand an age مَضَىpassed وَالشَّملُand the fellowship بِالخَيرِin goodness جَامِعُuniting
وَعَصراً مَضَى وَالشَّملُ بِالخَيرِ جَامِعُ
O Abu Hasan, you reminded us of our bond and brotherhood,
Aba Hasan, you reminded us of the covenant and brotherhood,
And an age gone by, when our fellowship was united in goodness,
And days gone by while good unites us.
زَمَانَthe time when اصطَحَبنَاwe kept one another company فيin أمَانٍsafety وغِبطَةٍand happiness
زَمَانَ اصطَحَبنَا في أمَانٍ وغِبطَةٍ
وَللَّدِينَand for religion وَالدُّنيَاand worldly life لَدَينَاamong us مَوَاضعُplaces
وَللَّدِينَ وَالدُّنيَا لَدَينَا مَوَاضعُ
The time when we kept company in safety and happiness,
We lived in security and bliss,
And religion and worldly life had their places among us.
Serving faith and life in every way.
بُنُودُbanners ذَوِيthe people of الإِسلاَمِIslam تَخفِقُflutter أَينَمَاwherever
بُنُودُ ذَوِي الإِسلاَمِ تَخفِقُ أَينَمَا
تَوجَّهَتشturned (apparent typo for توجهت) الرَّاياتُthe standards فَالنَّصرُand so victory تَابِعُfollowing
تَوجَّهَتش الرَّاياتُ فَالنَّصرُ تَابِعُ
The banners of the people of Islam fluttered wherever
The flags of Islam raise victory and conquest,
The standards turned, and victory followed.
Wherever they advance triumph follows.
فَتمَّتso became complete بِهَاthrough them النِّعماblessings وَحُقَّand was due لَنَاto us الهَنَاjoy
فَتمَّت بِهَا النِّعما وَحُقَّ لَنَا الهَنَا
وقامَتand stood firm بهthrough it فيماin what لَدَيهِwas in its keeping الشَّرَائِعُthe sacred laws
وقامَت به فيما لَدَيهِ الشَّرَائِعُ
So through them blessings were complete, and joy was our due,
Through them bounty came, as law decreed,
And through it the sacred laws stood firm in all that was in its keeping.
Upholding all that faith required.
وَلَسنَاand we are not نُبَرِّىwe absolve النَّفسَthe soul مَنfrom أَمرِthe matter of سُوئِهَاits wrongdoing
وَلَسنَا نُبَرِّى النَّفسَ مَن أَمرِ سُوئِهَا
وَلَولاَهُand were it not for it مَاnot حَلَّتbefell عَلَينَاupon us الفَجَائِعُcalamities
وَلَولاَهُ مَا حَلَّت عَلَينَا الفَجَائِعُ
And we do not absolve the soul of its wrongdoing;
We claim no virtue, though we've shunned all vice,
But for that, calamities would not have befallen us.
Else calamities would not have come our way.
فَإنso if حَالَتِchanged الأحوَالُcircumstances عَمَّاfrom what عَهِدتُّهَاI knew them to be
فَإن حَالَتِ الأحوَالُ عَمَّا عَهِدتُّهَا
وَصَارَand became مِنَamong الأَعداthe enemies الصَّدِيقُthe friend المُشَايعُsupportive
وَصَارَ مِنَ الأَعدا الصَّدِيقُ المُشَايعُ
So if circumstances have changed from how I knew them,
Now that times have changed from what we knew,
And the supportive friend has become one of the enemies,
When friend seems foe and comrade stays aloof,
وبثand scattered عنانthe reins الخَلقِof humankind فيin الأَرضِthe earth بَغيُهُمtheir oppression
وبث عنان الخَلقِ في الأَرضِ بَغيُهُم
ورَاعَتand frightened قُلُوبُthe hearts المُؤمِنينَof the believers الرَّوَائِعُterrors
ورَاعَت قُلُوبُ المُؤمِنينَ الرَّوَائِعُ
And their oppression has scattered humankind's reins across the earth,
Wrongdoing spreads across the land unchecked,
And terrors have frightened the believers' hearts,
And panic grips the hearts of all believers,
فَصَالِحَةُthen good العُقبَىthe final outcome لِكُلِّfor every مُوَحِّدٍbeliever in God's oneness
فَصَالِحَةُ العُقبَى لِكُلِّ مُوَحِّدٍ
وَإنand even if زَعزَعَتهُshook him النَّائِبَاتُcalamities الزَّعَازِعُbuffeting
وَإن زَعزَعَتهُ النَّائِبَاتُ الزَّعَازِعُ
Then a good end awaits every believer in God's oneness,
There's solace for each faithful monotheist,
Even if buffeting calamities shake him.
Though storms may buffet, shake his constancy.
