    All poetry about you sobs!

Anger has died deep within us!

We are a people: whenever slaughter claims

    lives, speeches are exhausted.

    هرِئَت في جفنها القُضُبُ

    There are no swords in our scabbards;

the swords have decayed in their sheaths.

History has already folded our page,

and the noble ones have vanished within its folds.

So ascend to God, O Aleppo!

Among the dead, no one leaps.

    All those whose tears streamed

    over France—their case is strange:

Their faces were unveiled for her,

but before al-Shahba, they don veils.
