    I have come—pardon my coming—

    weary, captive, broken, parched.

I have come to enter consecration within your two courtyards.

Peace to your resting-place from a consecrated pilgrim.

For since I was a child, I have seen al-Husayn

as a beacon, to whose light I belong.

And since I was a child, I have found al-Husayn

a refuge within whose walls I shelter.

And since I was a child, I have known al-Husayn

as nourishment at the breast—and to this day I have not been weaned!

  6. *

    *

    *

    *

Peace upon you, for you are peace,

though you are stained with blood.

And you are the guide to pride,

through what was trampled of your noblest breast.

And you are the refuge of the fearful,

O you who were not spared the slaughter.

You said to the soul, “This is your path:

meet death upon it, that you may be safe.”

  11. *

    *

    *

    *

You plunged in, though death had been tightly braided,

leaving no opening for the soul.

It did not circle you; rather, you circled

death, clad in tightly woven mail

    of defiance and mighty pride,

until you saw, and it went blind.

Then it touched you unwittingly—and died,

leaving you a star among the stars!

  16. *

    *

    *

    *

Until the Day of Resurrection, the question remains:

Is death, in its obscure form,

the irrevocable fate that cannot be turned back,

or the servant of irrevocable fate?!

  19. *

    *

    *

    *

Peace upon you, beloved of the Prophet,

and his bud—how goodly a bud you are!

You bore the Prophet’s most cherished qualities,

and prevailed by his most upright standard,

the proof being that they gave you a choice,

as they gave him one, and you were not diminished.

Rather, you chose your death, with forehead bared,

and did not look back, nor did you regret it.

And never has the earth turned without you

being a twin brother to its radiance!

  25. *

    *

    *

    *

    Peace upon your family, circling

    around you in that inferno,

as they defend, with their bare chests,

    your pure, most compassionate breast,

and embrace, with the pride of prophets,

the arrows that have sunk into them.

    Peace upon them—upon two palms

like two suns in a pitch-dark firmament,

their inner surfaces shining with light,

while blood streams from the wrist!

  31. *

    *

    *

    *

    Peace upon a halo ascending

with her radiance to the heights of Maryam,

    pure, crowned with majesty,

    stained with crimson blood.

The eloquence of all men collapsed

    before her inspired lamentation.

Then she began to shake the throne of error

with a voice filled with its anguish.

  36. *

    *

    *

    *

And had the earth a little shame,

it would have reeled at her orphaned letters!

  38. *

    *

    *

    *

Peace upon al-Hurr in your two courtyards,

and his charge—what a mighty charge!

Peace upon him, as vast as the torment

and as vast as his most gallant rending.

Peace upon him—and reproach upon him,

the reproach of one passionately enamored of him.

How, with a thousand swords, were you bridled,

when all your life, O Hurr, you had never been bridled?!

And how did you hold back, with a thousand swords?

Even had I been alone, I would not have held back,

    nor waited for them until

their circles turned upon you, O my blood.

I would have torn away the borders of Iraq,

even with their halters in my mouth.

I would have changed the history of this soil,

so the sons of Muljam could not have harmed it!

  47. *

    *

    *

    *

Peace upon al-Hurr—a consciousness that shone,

and a Zarqa who, from her dark night,

looked out upon a thousand generations yet to come,

and plunged back to the most ancient, most ancient.

She discerned the voice—the voice of prophethood—

as he hurled himself upon his death.

She did not bargain with herself over loss,

nor bargain with herself over gain.

But she knelt, while al-Husayn’s eyelids

fluttered over that place of kneeling.

  53. *

    *

    *

    *

And, my master, O most honored of men,

    O unsheathed blade, never assayed,

and O son of him whose sword still,

when one cries, “O Dhu al-Fiqar, strike!”—

you feel the chivalry of a million swords

flow between your palm and your sword-belt!

And you almost... then you let your hands fall,

and disown your claim—what a claim!

For what are your swords beside Dhu al-Fiqar,

and what are you beside that lion?!

  59. *

    *

    *

    *

Ali—O Ali of guidance and struggle,

how great you were before God as a Muslim!

And O most noble of people after the Prophet

in countenance—and richest of penniless men!

  62. *

    *

    *

    *

You possessed both lives, this world and the next,

with not a dirham in your house!

A ransom for your reverent humility from one who speaks,

a ransom for your hunger from one who is mute!

  65. *

    *

    *

    *

    I have come—pardon my coming—

a mixture of blood and bitter colocynth.

Within me is anger too great to conceal,

and a soul that would not let me say, “Hold your anger in.”

It is as though you woke Iraq’s wound,

and its whole current is in my blood!

Are you not the one who said to the cleaving blades,

“Take me,” and to the soul, “Do not be defeated”?

And circled his children, while the swords

around them were a bracelet upon a wrist.

Then pride clamored within his ribs,

and he cried to his death: “Advance!”

So are we, my master, O Husayn:

    unyielding against oppression, never bridled.

So are we, O sign of the Two Rivers:

our ramparts have never been demolished.

If indeed the oppressors clamored around you,

then we have been consigned to a still greater oppressor.

And if companions and intimates betrayed you,

then the one to whom we belong has betrayed us!

    Our cousins—our nearest kin—

each of them has become like a viper!

The eyes of wolves circle around us,

and we are bewildered: from which should we seek shelter?

For this we stood, naked in our wounds,

    towering above their vilest baseness.

O my master, O radiance of Karbala,

    glittering in the darkest gloom,

    its minarets shine with light

    and breathe out inspired anguish.

And O thirst: all the barrenness of the ages

will drink from its Zamzam watering-place.

I shall press my lips upon your two footprints:

peace to your earth from a kiss!
