I could almost swear, my lord: were you to stand

in your grave now, the whole earth would tremble!

People would behold a giant, his lock of hair

wrapped in clouds and the blue vault of heaven!

He gazes at them, and in his eyes is forgiveness,

and a look filled with compassion and sorrow.

I nearly cried out, 'O...'—then my blood shuddered

at the awe of your name; the yāʾ and alif remained

upon my lips, both awestruck; and there began

the unveiling of your visage from al-Jawza's summit.

Yes, it is I, O saint; I am borne

to you by the Tigris, the marshes and the palm fronds.

The longing of all Iraqis lifts me upward,

and all your kin in Jordan—turning

are their hearts, ascending along our stairways,

aflame, as we draw near to your lofty station.

Yes, it is I, dearest of men; you know me,

for I am a letter of yours that never strays.

Neither from you nor from glorious Iraq can anything drive me away—

not sorrow, not fear, not exhaustion, not privation.

    عَلَيكُما نَبْضُ قلبي ظَلَّ يَعتَكِفُ

    For you two were all my well-being;

my heart's pulse kept vigil over you both.

And you two were, for all the Arabs,

stature, a cooking pot, and water from which they drew.

And you two were the strength that kept my defiance alive

until I kept faith, and protected our people so they too would keep faith.

And they have kept faith—yes, by the Lord of the House! Their tears

are shed for you in every Arab land.

Did—did I hear you, my lord, asking me?

I know that you know more than I describe.

I see to the reach of my eye and the height of my hand,

while you sip from the kingdom of God.

Behold your two eyes, and in the radiance of their light

I see God's most exalted bounds revealed:

    love, tenderness, forgiveness and compassion,

and a gleam that flashes past like the dart of lightning.

In it I see the grandeur of the whole universe,

while I feel something warm dripping,

as though it were tears, were it not for my deep knowledge

that your tears are precious, O proud one.

I am the one who came to weep; I came borne

to you by my people's sufferings; all of them have bled.

And all their heads have been trampled in arrogance.

O my lord, oppression and arrogance have roared among us.

  25. *

    *

    *

    *

And after those summits and that glory, our nation

has come to be swept into the lowest abysses of humiliation.

O our people, O Iraqis, O proud ones,

O diggers of graves, who stood above them

    for ninety-odd months, shedding blood,

each above his own grave—never to turn away.

For his grave was the measure of his zeal,

not like those who appear alive yet are carrion.

O God, if only my people had done justice to their blood!

But my people, in their extreme humiliation, did it no justice.

Rather, they condoned all that makes the brow sweat with shame,

until truthfulness and honor had indeed died among us!

As for those whose horses raided for a time,

but who charged against their own people and never desisted,

they were the world's tyrants through the outrages they wrought,

and their people dragged their chains in the abysses of their oppression.

  34. *

    *

    *

Behold, my lord, you see how small they have become.

Their greatest now puts disgrace itself to shame.

And we gaze at them—not to compare,

far be that from you, my lord, you for whom tremble

even the stars of heaven—but at the incongruity

of naming the radiant star alongside shriveled dates!

Upon your radiance be God's peace, as long as rain falls,

and as long as morning brightness and the darkness of night alternate.
