I deemed your dwelling too noble to wither like ours,

O singer of the grove, never abased in all the grove's life.

The dew remains while a reach of it opens to the light,

which streams toward it; and the grove remains sovereign!

And you, my master, communed with it as an angel,

so the bewildered trees fluttered in rapture.

You sent your voice deep into the sap, awakening it,

until the leaves unfolded into ears!

You kindled in the clouds all the lightning of poetry,

and when you rained, the universe surged with melodies!

I wonder: did you sing, or chant them as scriptures,

pouring from God's kingdom in measured verse?

You filled the rivers of all the earth with sails,

and told the water: 'Water, become a flood!'

    سالَتْ بِهِنَّ فَجُنَّ الماءُ سَكرانا!

    You brought revelation in perfumed verses;

the rivers flowed with them, and the water went mad, drunk!

    نحنُ امتُحِنَّا بِهِ وَردا ً وأغصانا!

    Blessed are you: the grove has given you its joy;

we were tried by its roses and branches!

  10. *

    *

    Muhammad son of Sulayman—what visions

of revelation you set to music as waves and shores!

Glory to your Lord! Was David singled out for them,

these psalms—or did they single out Solomon?

Then he gathered them for his son, whose fingers play

    with them—angels awakening a devil!

  14. *

    *

    *

    *

My master, whose word is dewy, you strike it

into embers, yet upon our pains it remains dew-fresh.

As though your word, with all its glow

and greenness, were a spring of water just now sunlit!

As though, borne on revelation's wing,

it were a star shining rapturously in the dark.

But we, my master—our pages have choked

on the tears and smoke we spew upon them.

The necks of our letters are forever twisted

above the lines; we fear them, and they fear us.

Both of us have come to fear the line we write,

lest it awaken; so we look away from our intentions.

So we hide our poems, and they hide us

beneath symbols; we forget them, and they forget us!

  22. *

    *

    *

    *

Seventy years we have traversed, provoked to bloodshed,

and our deaths fill the earth with wombs

that bear for vengeance the purest heirs to our blood,

while within them we are blades dressed in shrouds!

    Graves remain births deferred,

so long as those of great purpose dwell in them!

  26. *

    *

    *

    *

Seventy years—and all the arenas know

that we established our anchorage on death's brink.

There our fairest little sons were shooting stars,

falling as the arenas' pillars shook, pillar by pillar.

And now we have come to fear the word we write,

and guard against our own kin before all others!

If only those radiant years had never been watered,

and that bitter bleeding had never been!

  31. *

    *

    *

    *

    هَبْ هذهِ الكَلِماتِ العُرْجَ سِيقانا

    My master al-Badawi, anguish has shaken me;

    give these limping words legs,

so that perhaps, with my arteries, despite my limp,

I may fashion from them a balance for some people.

I say to the Arabs now gathered around me:

May God disgrace you, uncles and brothers!

The throats of all your lands have been slit,

yet still you remain the executioner's helpers!

I say: tomorrow your sons will ask

where their fathers were amid our calamities.

What shall we tell them? That they were brokers

for the aggressor, selling at the basest prices?!

What shall we say? That from your houses invaded us

these vipers, laid low in our dwelling?

And that you—may God never moisten your mouths—

your houses have become homelands for invaders?

And that a brazier—its chimneys they scattered,

belching smoke from every one of your houses—

will blaze tomorrow across all the land of the Arabs,

and rise upon Islam's summit in flames?

What shall we say when your dignity

weeps over its worth, so deeply has it been abased!

Your laughter now enrages even the most abject of people,

whenever one of you is said to have betrayed!

As though it were a joke told to make you laugh.

Has the language of humiliation become an addiction?!

Or have you risen another rank in abasement,

now that you have become servants and slaves?!

  46. *

    *

    *

    *

    صِرنا نُجَدِّفُ حَدَّ الكَفْرِ أحيانا

    My master, pardon my voice for spewing blood;

at times we have come to blaspheme to the point of unbelief.

Which of our veils has not yet been torn?

And which of our lands has not yet suffered?

Look: the arena of the Arabs and Islam is a slaughterhouse,

and look: Damascus now weeps with Baghdad.

A lofty edifice fell; we called upon no Mu'tasim for it,

nor cried out for Marwan, even in a whisper,

nor screamed as one stabbed screams from

the depths of his wound, in pride and defiance.

Instead we polish our scream until it gleams,

and may soften our complaint to the verge of tears.

Now the most abject of mortals whittles his stick for us,

while we smile in apprehension and submission.

    { تَأنَّقَ الذ ُّلُّ حتى صارَ غُفرانا!}

I would ransom you, my master, when you said, as one slaughtered:

'Abasement grew so refined that it became forgiveness!'

  55. *

    *

    *

    *

My master al-Badawi, now interceding for me

is this bleeding, that I may come to you thirsty.

I say: all the Arabs' waters have run dry,

while yours are the valleys richest in water.

So grant my mouth a sip of what you have brimmed with

throughout your life, in rivers and pools,

that perhaps, while Baghdad's blaze looks toward me,

    I may make even a brook run through its embers now;

that perhaps my voice may rise in its minarets,

with something of your voice, as Gospel and Qur'an,

    kissing people, person by person,

and embracing houses, doors and walls,

saying: a surge of water has come from Damascus,

to give you drink now, thirsty one after thirsty one,

balming the soul until through it awaken

those noble virtues he sang of for ages.

Then, my master, in our eyes will slumber

Muhammad son of Sulayman, a Solomon!
