    An honor beyond which there is no honor:

    That Najaf is now your throne.

    O you, with wings astir,

    You tremble in al-Karrar's precincts.

    An honor that every flash

    Or flutter quivers with awe

    In your wings—that their beating

    Professes its love for Ali.

    An honor beyond which there is no honor:

    That Najaf is now your home.

    If you have stood bewildered,

    For the prophets stood right here.

    فالنَّبيُّونَ هَهنا نَزَفوا

    Or if you came bleeding, be sparing;

    For the prophets bled right here.

    And be humble, for every fingertip

    Here has blood dripping upon it!

    Pouring from Ali to this day,

    Beneath it, the firmly rooted mountains cave in.

    So be brief, if you have come to

    Declare your sorrow, O love-stricken one!

    I marvel, O Husayn: how is it that here

    The palm fronds do not turn red?

    How does the sky remain clear

    Like this, while the branches bend,

    As though there had been no rain here

    Whose blood flashes like its lightning!

    The soil of the prophets is safeguarded

    By being now beyond what I can describe.

    Whenever rained upon, it flourishes with ripe dates,

    While the crop of other soil is shriveled dates.

    My master, O Ali, pardon me:

    I sip from your palms.

    You are the master of the most eloquent speech,

    And all creation draws from your bounty.

    So if ever I stand agitated,

    Then forgive the stance I take.

    لَيتَني لي بِظِلِّهِ كَنَفُ

    I am before majesty in its entirety;

    Would that I had shelter in its shade!

    Would that the Euphrates' water became for me

    Tears streaming into your soil.

    O bareheaded one, who forever

    Wraps himself in the sheaths of hearts,

    O daring one, whose sword-edges

    Dispel every night,

    O captor, held captive by piety,

    Who draws near to none but God.

    He is Islam's dawn; his greatest distinction:

    That he is that high-minded young man,

    نَزَلَتْ مِن سَمائِها الصُّحُفُ

    About whom, as he opened his hand,

    The scriptures descended from their heaven;

    شَعَفاتُ القلوبِ تَنشَعِفُ

    And at whose clenched hand

    The tips of hearts are seared;

    بابُ رَبِّي، وانجابَت السُّجُفُ

    And through whose prayer there burst open

    My Lord's gate, and the veils parted;

    جَبَلاً قلتُ سوفَ يَنخَسِفُ

    Whose zeal, were it to touch

    A mountain—I would say it would cave in;

    قبلَ خَطفِ العيونِ تَنخَطِفُ

    And whose sword—by it, souls

    Are snatched away before it catches the eye;

    And when his radiant brow appears,

    Every sun in the universe is eclipsed.

    He is Islam's dawn; its pearls

    Are his family, and the worlds are the shells.

    وأجِزْني، فالليلُ يَنتَصِفُ

    O cousin of the Prophet, be kind to me,

    And grant me leave, for the night is halfway through;

    And I still see my pen

    And my hand and the lines trembling.

    I am in your two presences: one stands

    Before my eyes, while the other flutters

    Within my ribs; since they were rounded into a cage,

    My ribs have kept vigil around you!

    Then pardon me if I stumble here

    From my reverence—and Najaf excuses me!
