تَعْدوcharge عَلَيناat us ، وَتَشكوand complain مِنof تَغاضِيناour disregard !
We were tested by days that were tested by us,
which charge upon us and complain of our disregard!
لاnot صَيفُهاtheir summer كانَwas ذاpossessed of زَرعcrops ٍ فَيُطعِمُناso feeds us
ولاnor شِتاهاtheir winter بِذيpossessed of ضَرْعan udder ٍفَيُرْويناso quenches us
Their summer bore no crop to feed us,
nor their winter an udder to quench us;
ولاnor عَرَفْناwe knew بِهاin them طَلاdew ً يُباكِرُناgreets us at dawn
وَلاnor وَجَدْfound ناwe بِهاin them ظِلاshade ً يُغاديناgreets us in the morning
nor did we know dew in them to greet us at dawn,
nor find shade in them to meet us in the morning.

Yes, we were granted locusts in our pastures,
which we rear on a harvest of our tragedies,
وَحُرْقَةand a burning ache ًقَرِحَتْgrew sore أنْدىthe dewiest جَوانِحِناof our ribs

and a burning ache—our dewiest ribs grew sore
from its scorching—and emptiness filling our hands;
وَلَهْفَةand yearning ًلِقُطَيْراتِfor little drops النَّدىof dew جَمَعَتْgathered

and yearning for little drops of dew that gathered
the panting of seventy generations of our sacrificial victims!
ياO خالَmaternal uncle of عَوفٍAwf وَقَدand indeed ضاقَتْnarrowed مَذاهِبُناour paths

وانداحَتand spread open الأرضُthe earth أغواراchasms ًأفانيناof many kinds
O Awf's uncle, our paths have narrowed,
and the earth has opened into chasms of every kind,
تُطِلُّpeer out منهاfrom it ذtails (word beginning) ُنابَى(completes 'tails') ماnot لَهاthey have عَدَnumber (word beginning) دٌ(completes 'number')

from which tails peer out, too numerous
to count, and ogres' fangs in millions.
لَمnot نَألُwe spared effort نَرصُدُهاwe watch it دَهْراfor an age ًوَتَرصُدُناand it watches us

We have spared no effort, watching it for an age as it watches us;
we draw near and it draws near; we count it and it counts us,
حَتَّىuntil تَبَيَّنَbecame clear مِنَّاfrom us ماwhat تُحاذِرُهit fears it ُ
فيat حينa time ِأسفَرَbecame revealed مِنهاfrom it ماwhat يُجَرِّيناemboldens us
until what it fears of us became clear,
while what emboldens us in it stood revealed.
وَلَمand not نَزَلْwe have ceased نَتَمَلاwe contemplate َّهاit مُرَوَّعَةterror-stricken ً

وَلَمand not تَزَلْit has ceased تَتَمَلاit contemplates َّهاthem مُريعيناterrifying ones
And still we contemplate it, terror-stricken as it is,
and still it contemplates them as terrifiers.

And if we wanted to grind it down,
we would turn upon it with molars like grinding mills.
لكِنَّناbut we كَرَماout of generosity ًمِنَّاfrom us نَرىwe see سَبَبَاa means ً
لِلخَيْرto good ِأنْthat يَتَرَوَّىshould deliberate سَهْمُthe arrow راميناof our archer !
But, out of our generosity, we see a means
to good in our archer's arrow taking its time!
