Every utterance without your approval is hypocrisy.

It is no utterance unless you speak, O Iraq.

It is no utterance unless there stand the crowns of the

Palms in a row, and the date clusters rise,

    Tossing their hair, until indeed

The dates above them turn to colocynth no one can taste!

It is no utterance unless the water of the two Euphrates

Has eyes as numerous as its waves,

Bulging, and the shores have ears,

And truth a cry that cannot be stifled.

As many as the stars, the victims will fall,

And your blood will be spilled in seas.

The two rivers will flow like volcanic torrents,

And seven heavens, tier upon tier, will fall in fire.

And the palms will march as a fearsome army,

Its giant trunk slaps the wind.

And the marshes will roar, a forest of death,

    Thundering until the noose tightens.

Then Iraq will speak, and there will be

From its echo, a range for every voice!

Every utterance without your approval is hypocrisy.

You alone are the voice and the echo, O Iraq.

    فيكَ عرسُ الدِّما ، ومنكَ الصَّداقُ

    You alone are the voice of all the oppressed;

In you is the wedding of blood, and from you the dower.

And all the peoples who have been provoked—

To them, you are the purest blood that is shed.

If you fall short, then every child on my land

Is an orphan, and every wedding a divorce!

  16. *

    وَحدَكَ الآنَ كَوكَبٌ بَرّاقُ

    Every star stands still in its sphere;

You alone now are a brilliant planet.

You alone now fill the universe with terror,

And deadly fates close in upon you.

Hell's Hummers, and the raging tank tracks,

And your slain, and the brazen faces,

And fires blazing in the corpses of the

Children ... and the kidnappers, and the thieves,

And the women's wailing, and slaughter, until

The blades and the spittle shudder,

All of them will one day become—

What death, driven toward what death!

  23. *

    *

    *

    *

O the dignity of all my people, trampled underfoot,

And O all that discord has stirred up

Among my people, so they made death their judge,

So deadly fates race to reach them.

You will not rest, for in my people's blood

Is a rallying surge whose pride cannot be withstood!

  27. *

    *

    *

The heads flung down in every pass

Will remain, with necks striving toward them.

And the day will come when

Every head meets its shoulders, O Iraq!

And the souls that splintered will heal,

And longing and compassion will return.

On that day, every splinter of lead

    Will have its heel interrogated.

On that day, every drop of our blood

Will become an eye with its eyelid's lining.

History will be inscribed in blood, until

The pens and the pages shudder!
