A desert waste it is: we fold it up, and it folds us.

Hasten, footsteps: night travel has grown urgent within us.

Have our arbors not enriched the forest of thorns?

Have our watercourses not sated the noonday heat?

And the drifting sands, which have bloodied our eye sockets—

Has what we bent of our own drifting sands not swept them away?

As though we had not lowered our towering heights,

Nor melted our entrails in our efforts to keep away,

Nor plowed the stones? Nor had our blood

Watered them? Nor had our hands planted anything?

Hasten, footsteps: our ribs are burning,

Our footholds burn, our abysses burn.

    تَحَمَّلينا غِضابا ًمَستَفَزِّينا !

    You have borne us wounded, spewing blood;

Bear us angry, goaded to fury!

Bear us while excess rage grinds us down

As a millstone grinds, and the reopened wound drives us wild.

Bear us, for patience spits us out,

And a thousand black darknesses call us,

And a raging brazier lies in wait for us,

And our strivings hurry toward it!

Hasten, footsteps: this road's roughest stretch

Is a little cloud and a little grass that breed softness!

How much dewy greenery we have pillowed on, and how many a spring

Of gushing water we have visited till it nearly led us astray!

And how many a shade-giver whose arbors we sheltered beneath—

We did not know we had sheltered beneath snakes,

Until every branching bough hung down upon us

With a thousand speckled snakes, striking us dead, fang-deep.

So our hungry one returned to chewing his own flanks,

And our naked one clothed himself in his spilled blood.

We have renounced desire; so, our entrails, sink inward

Right to our backs; and you, ghosts of our past,

Tighten upon every vein in our limbs

    Until artery cuts through artery,

Until we return, with no illusion keeping us awake,

And no mirage amid affliction feeding us hopes!

Press on, tireless one: how many an oasis has etched

The hue of shadows upon our night-traveler's lashes!

We were vowed to this sand: we chew it

At times, and at times it chews at our eye corners.

We are roasted upon it, and in our thirst it gives us

Embers to drink, while our bleeding wounds water it copiously.

And we meet while the raging winds slap us,

Yet our eye corners entwine no lashes!

Our weary one may approach shade almost close enough to touch,

And our thirsty one gulp water as far as the throat,

And an age may pass over us while our watcher sees

No shade, not even from a bird's wing,

And our shadow vanishes, so closely has

The sun clung to our heads: we draw it near, and it draws us near!

Press on, burden-bearer: how wretched a traveler

Toward the sun, walking to it with shadow and clay!

We have sown its radiance in our eye sockets,

And stoked its blaze in the bends of our bodies,

And massed for it our most resolute caravans,

So they sped on, and our driver chanted the people onward.

And still, no child stands upright upon a foot

Except to toddle in the footsteps of the next of us!

O Awf's uncle, may God guard you wherever

Your footsteps carry you, and may the lovers' longing water you,

And may the freshest thing within our ribs flutter around you,

If any dewy remnant lies in our inner folds,

And may an impulse kiss your generous mouth,

Of longing, swelling within us and filling us with sorrow.

Indeed, whoever asks us about you here finds

Someone else asking about you, as long as our gathering places teem!

One hoping for a hot breath that sets us ablaze,

And one hoping for a refreshing spray that soothes us.

So may we never be denied a roar from you that makes us foam,

Nor lack a clear stream from you that gives us drink,

Nor may our breezes pass you by, however scant,

Nor our morning rains forsake you, however dry.

O Awf's uncle, we bear a noble legacy from you:

Our rhymes and affliction answer one another.

We see the knives' flash before they fly loose,

So our redeemer embraces the wound before the stabbing,

And we hear the voiceless sigh, before

The lips part to release it; it saddens us and kindles us.

O Awf's uncle, we have bound every limb

In us to one who fights to the death, bleeding and making us bleed,

To one grievously wounded, ready to die, who toward his summit

Strives, then falls: sacrifice upon sacrifice.

He melts away each day some of his last life-breath,

Until he almost ... and our death-herald's voice rises!

O Awf's uncle, shall I not tell you what

Fate has hidden for us of what you once foretold us?

I tell you that, with one eye half closed,

We doze, palm above palm for reassurance.

We have no fear, but our fledglings

Are unused to the vipers in our shelters.

So we give them one palm, and offer the

Fangs another: we twist them, and they twist us.

We suppress the sigh, burying it deep in the wound,

To keep the sleeping downy fledglings asleep!

I tell you that, though our primary feathers have been clipped,

We have never slackened, rising as far as our secondary feathers could.

And however they blow, shaking all,

The raging winds fall away from our ascending heights,

They have not tilted one wing from our lofty peaks,

Nor swerved, their courses being our courses!

O Awf's uncle, they have not been slit, as they imagined—

Our necks—no, nor have our forelocks been shorn!

We are immense, as you desire: giants,

As you have known us; our onrushing forces are fearsome,

Black: misery assails them in turn and stokes them,

As the wind assailed volcanoes in turn!

We were tested by days that were themselves tested by us,

Assailing us, and complaining of our disregard!

Their summer bore no crops to feed us,

Nor their winter an udder to give us drink,

Nor did we know in them dew to greet us at dawn,

Nor find in them shade to greet us in the morning.

Yes, we were granted locusts in our grazing grounds,

We nurture them on a harvest of our tragedies,

And a burning ache that ulcerated our freshest ribs

With its scorch, and emptiness filling our hands,

And yearning for tiny drops of dew, which gathered

The panting of seventy generations of our sacrifices!

O Awf's uncle, our paths have narrowed,

And the earth has spread into depths of every kind,

From which tails peer out, in numbers that cannot

Be counted, and ghouls' fangs by the million.

We never ceased watching them through an age, as they watched us,

We draw near and they draw near; we count them and they count us,

Until what they dread became plain in us,

While what emboldens us emerged from them,

And we still behold them terror-stricken,

And they still behold us as terrifying.

And if we wished to grind them down,

We would turn upon them with our mills' grinding molars,

But, out of our generosity, we see a cause

For good in our archer's arrow pausing to reflect!
