In the age of hawks, you have become doves.

How can doves live among hawks?

أيُّ عُرسٍ هذا تزُفّونَ ماذا

أيُّ عُرسٍ هذا تزُفّونَ ماذا

ولماذا يُطبَّلُ الإعلامُ

ولماذا يُطبَّلُ الإعلامُ

What wedding is this? What are you escorting in bridal procession?

And why all the media's drumming?

ثَكِلَتْ أُمُّكمْ أليسَ لديكمْ

ثَكِلَتْ أُمُّكمْ أليسَ لديكمْ

غيُر عاش السلام يحيا السلامُ

غيُر عاش السلام يحيا السلامُ

May your mother be bereaved of you! Have you nothing

but 'Long live peace! Long live peace!'?

والخواجة شَيْلوك في الذَّبحِ ماضٍ

منذ أن غَلّنا أللِنْبِيْ الهمامَ

And Khawaja Shylock presses on with slaughter,

ever since valiant Allenby shackled us.

أوَ غَيْرَ السَّاطوِر يُبصِرُ شيئاً

أوَ غَيْرَ السَّاطوِر يُبصِرُ شيئاً

تاجرْ البندقيِّة اللحَّامُ

Does he see anything but the cleaver—

the Merchant of Venice, the butcher?

في مَهَبِّ الرَّدى أمامي رصاصٌ

I said, as my people's missiles warbled,

and darkness had reddened with flame:

أعلينا وأنتِ غرْسُ يدينا

أيها العاشقون فاض الغرامُ

Against us, though you are what our hands planted?

O lovers, passion has overflowed!

ليسَ بَعْدَ اليقين يا عينُ شكٌ

أثْبَتَ الفعلُ ما نفاهُ الكلامُ

There is no doubt after certainty, O eye.

Deeds have proved what words denied.

مع مَنْ أنتمُ وهلاّ رَفَعْتُمْ

مِنْ ركوعٍ تصطكُّ منه العظامَ

Whose side are you on? Why have you not risen

from a bowing that makes the bones clatter?

مُسِخَ الُحبُّ فالحبيبُ غوريلا

مُسِخَ الطب فالطبيبُ الُجذامُ

Love has been warped: the beloved is a gorilla;

medicine has been warped: the physician is leprosy.

أينَ مليارُ لا ومليارُ كلا

أينَ تلك المُحرَّمات الجِسامُ

أينَ تلك المُحرَّمات الجِسامُ

Where are a billion cries of 'No' and a billion of 'Absolutely not'?

Where are those weighty prohibitions?

ما لتلك اللاءات تهويْ تِباعاً

ما لتلك اللاءات تهويْ تِباعاً

أَوَ هَلْ صار ربَّنا العمُّ سامُ

أَوَ هَلْ صار ربَّنا العمُّ سامُ

Why are those noes falling one after another?

And has Uncle Sam become our Lord?

قُتِلتْ لا حبيبةُ العُمر غدراً

قُتِلتْ لا حبيبةُ العُمر غدراً

ونَعَمْ رفرفتْ لها الأعلامُ

ونَعَمْ رفرفتْ لها الأعلامُ

'No', the love of a lifetime, was treacherously slain,

and 'Yes'—the flags fluttered for her.

آَتَزُفُّ القيانُ إِسِتْيرَ أُخرى

أم سَلوميْ لها تُدارُ الُمدامُ

Are the singing girls escorting another Esther as a bride,

You have turned all the scales upside down,

and the forbidden now ranks first among the lawful.

تابعوا الَكشفَ يا زَعاماتِ قَومي

فبِكم تَفْخَرُ الكشوفُ العِظامُ

Keep on discovering, O leaders of my people,

for great discoveries take pride in you.

أيهوديةٌ فلسطيُن أيضاً

وأخونا ذو الغِبْطةِ الحاخامُ

وأخونا ذو الغِبْطةِ الحاخامُ

Is Palestine Jewish too,

and is our brother His Beatitude the rabbi?

أَوَ هذا وَعْدٌ لبلفورَ ثانِ

فامضِ بِلْفورُ ما عليكَ مَلامُ

And is this a second Balfour pledge?

So go on, Balfour; no blame rests on you.

أيها البائعونَ حيفا ويافا

أهـجومٌ هذا أمِ استسلامُ

O you who sell Haifa and Jaffa,

And among people, O Jamil, are monkeys,

and among people—yes, by my Lord—are ostriches.

وَقَعَ السقْفُ يا صناديدَ قوميْ

وَقَعَ السقْفُ يا صناديدَ قوميْ

أوَ صاحونَ أنتمُ أمْ نيامُ

أوَ صاحونَ أنتمُ أمْ نيامُ

The roof has fallen, O champions of my people!

And are you awake, or asleep?

أين فتحٌ وأين إنَّا فَتَحْنا

أين فتحٌ وأين إنَّا فَتَحْنا

شَدَّ ما غَيَّرَتْكُمُ الأيامُ

شَدَّ ما غَيَّرَتْكُمُ الأيامُ

Where is Fatah, and where is 'Indeed, We have granted victory'?

How greatly the days have changed you!

سُورةُ الفتح أُنزِلتْ في رعيلٍ

سُورةُ الفتح أُنزِلتْ في رعيلٍ

العماليقُ عندَهم أَقْزامُ

العماليقُ عندَهم أَقْزامُ

The Surah of Victory was revealed among a band

to whom giants were dwarfs.

نَفَروا خَلْفَ قائدٌ من قُريشٌ

نَفَروا خَلْفَ قائدٌ من قُريشٌ

عَقِمتْ عن نظيرهِ الأرحامُ

عَقِمتْ عن نظيرهِ الأرحامُ

They went forth behind a leader from Quraysh—

wombs have been barren of his equal.

لا دُمىً لا تآمرٌ لا ذِئابٌ

لا دُمىً لا تآمرٌ لا ذِئابٌ

لا قطيعٌ يساقُ لا أصْنامُ

لا قطيعٌ يساقُ لا أصْنامُ

No puppets, no conspiracy, no wolves,

no herd being driven, no idols.

قَتَلَتْكُمْ أَزِقَّةٌ تَتَلوَّى

قَتَلَتْكُمْ أَزِقَّةٌ تَتَلوَّى

وجحورٌ فيها أَفاعٍ عِظامُ

وجحورٌ فيها أَفاعٍ عِظامُ

Winding alleyways have killed you,

and burrows with huge vipers inside.
