لا تَنفَعُ التَعلُ في رَقراقِهِ الحافي
Many a far-off watering place had dread looming above its bank,
And a remote tract whose flank terror had already overspread,
where foxes are of no avail amid its bare, shimmering shallows.
No sandal [reading uncertain] helps the barefoot traveler amid its shimmer.

I came upon it at dawn with my companion, poised like a wolf,
I brought it a dawn visitor, wolf-like and well-proportioned,
as though his breast were a grinding-stone for shells.
His chest as though it were a pestle for grinding seashells.

I came to it early, before its sparrows could be seen,
I reached it early, before its sparrows could be found,
with my companion keeping hidden, and whatever else lay hidden.
My companion keeping himself concealed, though the hidden one was another.

The wild game gains nothing by being wary of him—
Wariness of him does not protect the wild beasts from him,
as though it hung there, caught upon a hook.
As though he were fastened to them with a hook.

Whenever I urge him to full speed, he keeps bearing onward,
When I urge him to speed, he keeps veering away,
like the rush of a torrent over floating papyrus.
Like a torrent passing over floating papyrus.
