The hunting instinct has deep roots in the genes of the human species, and it shares many traits with the instinct to kill; for human savagery is a primitive organ within us, difficult to excise, especially when hunting becomes part of amusement.

    "William James"

  2. ..

    ..

I take refuge in a metaphor of gazelles displaced through the stages.

I sip their shadows in a strange dusk.

And I open times within them for succession or for absurdity!

Then I protect them from rifle bullets.

Until, when a herd strays from me and dies,

I aim the rifle's muzzle toward my brain

To kill myself and count the corpses!

I am a refuge for the stray gazelles,

Yet perhaps I beg for the light of my time,

For the girl who promised me love has been married off

And loved an embrace on the morning when

I was trying to gather the gazelles for the sun's reserve.

Another embraced her in the morning,

    And I did not notice...

That a gazelle was conversing with me about the growth of the fields,

And the sweetness of the waters,

And the flood of moist air,

    But a beast besieges us,

Then robs us of our souls, wastefully and in vain.

So I told him about life's beasts and its enemies,

And gave him a time of glass,

And appetizing grass and a smooth-flowing time.

Like a song neither sung nor stolen.

I returned, taking refuge from beasts screaming in my memory,

From the stagnation of waters in the river's belly,

From waters that swept away the age of stone,

    And did not gush forth,

From the horror of her image in the waters,

As she embraces him and soothes his nights.

From every gloomy thing I fled,

And from desolation and darkness in the depths of those who killed me,

    And I was not wary

Of their strangeness when they said:

We saw him playing with the gazelle in the shade of a song that toys with the sun.

He is now filled with the place, and cloaked in visions and trees.

He has come to understand the meaning of reaching the spring,

Ablaze with metaphor, and filled with muteness.

Whenever the earth grows narrow in my restless Bedouin mind,

I became water; she established her covenants and the stone,

And here she is, gushing, bursting forth!

He was a stubborn gazelle with luscious eyes...

He was a unique gazelle, but he was killed!
