The Arabs did not submit to Caesar's authority

Even for a day, nor were they humbled before tyranny.

    وَالحُرُّ إِن بَسَمَ الأَذى لَم يَصبِرِ

    They do not endure harm, whatever it may be;

And a free man will not endure harm, even if it smiles.

The Turks grew proud, and we are a people

Who rose above the arrogance of the arrogant.

And behold, a plan we hatch for them,

Beneath spearheads, lances, and sturdy spears.

And the ally came and stood at our thresholds,

Bewildered; I am the bewildered one's guide.

And he sought aid from the noble Arabs; indeed they are

Succor to the outcast and aid to the seeker of aid.

And when the Arabs' thoroughbreds kindled fire in the darkness,

Striking sparks and neighing beneath every lion,

And when the swords were like stars,

Plunging, flashing in the murky dust,

The ally's scales tipped in his favor; whoever we stand

Beside is given a mighty, overwhelming advantage.

And our swords built us an edifice, yet he did not

Remember the Arabs' kindness—oh, the ingrate!

In the Merciful's keeping are the slain, laid low,

And upon soil safflower-dyed with men's blood.

The ally betrayed us; what promise did he keep

For even a day, and what pledge did he not violate?

When he had fulfilled his purpose through our swords,

He forgot the white hand of kindness, and did not remember.

And behold, the spilled blood: in its spilling there is no

Benefit, nor in its dark blood flowing down.

O you ally, our swords and our spears

Have not been nicked—know this—nor have they broken.

Yesterday they proved their mettle against your foes, and tomorrow,

    In every treacherous, stone-hard heart.

Breasts seethe, and in their seething there is

Only a warning of the tempest bursting forth.

And we have forced ourselves to bear with you, but cannot endure

Any more from you; this is no time for patience.

This land is our lair, and a ransom for it is

Every rending lion of Ya'rub's line.
