دَناhas drawn near المَوتُdeath مِنّيto me أَباO father of جَعفَرٍJa'far
وَغاضَand has ebbed الجَمالُbeauty وَزاغَand has strayed البَصَرْsight
Death has drawn near me, Abu Ja'far.
Death drew near me, oh Abu Ja'far
And beauty has ebbed, and my sight has strayed.
Beauty faded and sight wandered
سَأَقضيI shall die غَداًtomorrow فَالوَداعَso farewell الوَداعfarewell
I shall die tomorrow—so farewell, farewell!
Tomorrow I shall bid farewell, farewell of parting, farewell of life
A farewell of parting, a farewell to life.
And cross the isthmus of this life
وَاِعبُرُand I cross بَرزَخَthe isthmus هذيthis الحَياةْlife
وَكُلُّand every عَناءٍtoil لَهُfor it مُستَقَرْa resting place
And I cross the isthmus of this life;
And every fatigue has a resting place
And every toil has its resting place.
For you, my heart’s fire raged
لَكَfor you اللَهُGod سَعَّرتَyou kindled نارَthe fire الجَوىlove's anguish
بِقَلبيin my heart وَجانَبتَand you kept away لَمّاwhen اِستَعَرit blazed
God help you! You kindled the fire of love's anguish
And you ignited when it caught flame
In my heart, and withdrew when it blazed.
I would call “fire, fire!”
فَكُنتُso I was أُناديcalling out الحَريقَfire الحَريقْfire
وَنادَيتُand I cried ياO نارُfire كونيbe أَحَرْhotter
So I kept crying, "Fire! Fire!"
And I called “oh fire, burn hotter!”
And I cried, "O fire, burn hotter!"
You would not be kind like a lover
وَماand not كُنتَyou were تَعطِفُshowing tenderness عَطفَthe tenderness العَشيقof a lover
وَتَخنوand show tenderness حُنُوَّthe loving care الحَبيبِof the beloved الأَبَرْmost devoted
And you showed none of a lover's tenderness,
Nor gentle like a beloved companion
Nor the loving care of the most devoted beloved.
I suffered in love what sufferers in passion tasted
تَعَذَّبتُI suffered فيin الحُبِّlove مَنwho فيin الهَوىpassion
تَذَوَّقَhas tasted ماwhat ذُقتُI tasted مَنwho فيamong البَشَرْhumankind
I suffered in love—who, in passion,
Whoever has sampled what I have from mankind
Has tasted what I tasted? Who among humankind?
I disgraced my dear self and surrendered myself to you
أَهَنتُI humbled عَزيزيmy dear one وَأَسلَمتُand I surrendered نَفسيmyself
إِلَيكَto you لِتَرضىso you would be pleased أَلاdo you not تَذَّكِرْremember
I humbled my dear one and surrendered myself
Just to please you, do not remember
To you, to please you—do you not remember?
I opposed my family and made enemies of them
وَخالَفتُand I defied أَهليmy family وَعادَيتُهُمand I opposed them
وَهُمand they مِثلَماjust as قَدindeed عُلِمَتyou knew الغُسُرْthe harsh ones
And I defied my family and made enemies of them;
When the estrangement was already known
And they, as you well knew, are harsh.
I protected myself from your intent and aloofness
وَحاذَرتُand I feared مِنكَfrom you النَوىseparation وَالصُدودand rejection
وَلَمand not يُغنِavailed عَنّيme شَديدُextreme الحَذَرْcaution
And I feared separation and rejection from you,
But intense precaution did not avail me
But even utmost caution did me no good.
And here you are, you built and alas
وَهاand behold أَنَتyou قَدindeed بِنتَhave departed وَاِحَسرَتاهalas, my grief
وَغادَرَتنيand you left me لِعَذاريfor maidens أُخَرْother
And now you have departed—oh, my grief!
You left me to other regrets
And left me for other maidens.
Nothing remains of you but memories
وَلَمand not يَبقَremains مِنكَof you سِوىexcept ذِكرَياتmemories
وَلَمand not يَبقَremains ليfor me مِنكَof you إِلّاexcept صُوَرْimages
And nothing remains of you but memories;
And nothing remains of you for me but images
And nothing of you remains to me but images.
And ceaselessly complaining of the pain of separation
فَهاso behold أَنتَyou فيin الدَيرِthe monastery تَشكوyou lament الهَوىlove
وَمِنand of أَلَمِthe pain البُعدِof separation لاnot تَختَصِرْyou keep it brief
So here you are in the monastery, lamenting love,
I will squeeze tears from your eyelids
And speaking at length of the pain of separation.
And I will throw myself upon your arms
وَهاand behold أَنتَyou تَبكيweep بُكاءَthe weeping الرَضيعof a suckling child
فَأَمتَصُّso I suck مِنfrom مُقلَتَيكَyour two eyes العِبَرْthe tears
And here you are, weeping like a suckling child,
Gently, lest the waist break
So I suck the tears from your eyes.
Tickling the nipples, oh for love
وَأَرميand I throw بِنَفسيmyself عَلىonto ساعِدَيكyour two forearms
فَتَرفُقَso you are gentle بِالخَصَرwith the waist لاnot يَنكَسِرْit breaks
And I throw myself upon your forearms,
Oh what times have passed and gone
So you treat my waist gently, lest it break.
And here I am on death’s mattress
تُدَغدِغُyou tickle نَهدِيَmy breast ياoh لَلغَرامwhat passion
وَياand oh لِزَمانٍfor a time تَقَضّىthat ended وَمَرْand passed
You tickle my breast—oh, the passion!
Hearing the whispers of her who is departing
And oh, for a time that has ended and gone!
I marvel that my heart upholds its pacts
وَهاand behold أَنَذاhere I am فيon فِراشِthe bed المَماتof death
أَتَسمَعُdo you hear نَجوىintimate whispers الَّتيshe who تَحتَضِرْis dying
And here I am on the bed of death;
And fulfills its vows to one who betrayed
Do you hear the whispers of the dying woman?
Oh heart, if only when you clung to him
عَجِبتُI marvel لِقَلبيat my heart يَصونُit keeps العُهودthe pledges
وَيُوفيand fulfills الوُعودَthe promises لِمَنto one who قَدindeed غَدَرْhas betrayed
I marvel at my heart: it keeps its pledges,
Destiny’s hands had slain you
And fulfills its promises to one who proved faithless.
You led me to the path of annihilation
فَلَيتَكَif only you ياO قَلبُheart لَمّاwhen عَلِقتyou fell in love
بِهِwith him صَرَعَتكَstruck you down أَياديthe hands القَدَرْof fate
If only, O heart, when you fell in love
And he who guided him stumbled blindly
With him, the hands of fate had struck you down!
Why this humiliation, oh mistress of pride?
لَقَدindeed قُدتَنيyou led me لِسَبيلِonto the path الفَناءof annihilation
وَمَنand whoever كانَwas هاديهِhis guide أَعمىblind عَثَرْstumbled
You have indeed led me onto the path of annihilation,
Humiliating the soul is one of the greatest
And whoever has a blind guide stumbles.
Soon you will be done, so what care you
لِمَwhy الذُلَّabasement ياO رَبَّةَmistress of الكِبرِياءpride
لِإِذلالُكَindeed, your abasement of النَفسَthe self إِحدىone of الكُبَرْthe gravest calamities
Why abasement, O mistress of pride?
For the one who has abandoned you?
Abasing yourself is indeed one of the gravest calamities.
Forget him, let not arrogance make him gloat
سَتَقضينَyou will die عَمّاin قَريبٍa short while فَماso what
يَهُمُّكِmatters to you هَجرthe desertion الَّذيof the one who قَدalready هَجَرhas deserted
You will die before long, so what
Or a heart like stone rejoice
Does the desertion of the one who deserted you matter to you?
I die while others love my beloved
تُناسيهِput him out of mind لاlest يَزدَهيهِpuff him up الغُرورconceit
فَيَشمَتُso it gloats قَلبٌa heart لَهُof his كَالحَجَرْlike stone
Put him out of mind, lest conceit puff him up,
For this, death to me is a matter
And his heart, like stone, gloat.
Does it become easy for one who loves
أَموتُI die وَتَهوىand you love مِنَamong الغيدِthe graceful maidens غَيريsomeone other than me
لِهذاindeed, this مِنَthan المَوتِdeath عِنديto me أَمَرْbitterer
I die, and you love another among the graceful maidens;
To forget? By God a hidden blaze burns
This is indeed bitterer to me than death.
I wish you were between my hands
أَبَعديafter me? تَهونُyou become of little worth عَلىto مَنthe one whom تُحِبyou love
لِيَfor me اللَهُGod غائِرَةa jealous woman تَستَعِرْburning
After me, will you be of little worth to the one you love?
That I may press you firmly to my chest
God help me—a jealous woman ablaze!
And coil around you like snakes
وَدَدتُI wish لَوَif اَنَّكَthat you بَينَbetween اليَدَينthe two hands
أَضُمُّكَI clasp you لِلصَّدرِto the breast ضَمّاًin an embrace عَسِرْconstricting
I wish you were between my hands;
And watch my poison spread through you
I would clasp you to my breast in a constricting embrace,
And death would gather us, lifeless, on the bed
وَأَلتَفُّand I coil لَفَّthe coiling الأَفاعيof serpents عَلَيكaround you
وَأَنظُرُand I watch سُمِّيَmy poison فيكَwithin you اِنتَشَرْspread
And coil around you as serpents coil,
Oh how often beds gathered us in life
And watch my poison spread within you.
And you would spend your grief over me
وَيَجمَعُناand unites us مَيِّتينَboth dead السَريرُthe bed
وَياand oh طالَماhow often جَمَعَتناhave brought us together السُرُرْthe beds
And the bed would unite us, both dead—
But did not attain me, save barely
And oh, how often beds have brought us together!
But why, just stay, oh Ibrahim
وَتَقضيand you die وَيَقضَينَand they die حُزناًof grief عَلَيكfor you
وَماand not نالَattained مِنكَfrom you سِوايَanyone but me الوَطَرْdesired fulfillment
And you would die, and they would die of grief for you,
And take others in love after me, and go
And none but I had found fulfillment with you.
I will endure the rest of this life
Ibrahim
وَخُذand take فيin هَوىthe love الغيدِof graceful maidens بَعديafter me وَذَرْand leave
But why? Rather, live on, Ibrahim,
And which lover endures as I do?
And after me, take or leave the love of graceful maidens.
But come, stand over my head
سَأَصبِرُI shall endure باقيَthe remainder هذيof this الحَياةlife
وَأَيُّand which الأَحِبَّةِof the lovers مِثليlike me صَبَرْhas endured
I shall endure what remains of this life,
And kiss the lovely, tender eyes
And which lover has endured as I have?
And wet the roses of my cheek
وَلكِنbut تَعالَcome وَقِفand stand فَوقَabove رَأسيmy head
وَقَبِّلand kiss مَعينَthe wellspring الّلمىthe lips' dusky hue وَالحَوَرْand the eyes' black-white contrast
But come and stand at my head,
With your pouring, surging tears
And kiss the wellspring of dusky lips and dark eyes bright with white,
I die Abu Ja'far, so farewell
وَبَلِلand moisten مُصَوّحَwithered وَردِroses الخُدودof the cheeks
بِمَدمَعِكَwith your tears الساجِمflowing المُنهَمِرْstreaming
And moisten the withered roses of my cheeks
Farewell of parting, farewell of life
With your flowing, streaming tears.
أَموتُI am dying أَباO father of جَعفَرٍJa'far فَالوَداعso farewell
I am dying, Abu Ja'far—farewell!
A farewell of parting, a farewell to life.
