هَلcan ...? غَيرُanything other than سَيلٍa torrent مِنof دَمٍblood دافِقِgushing
يَرويquenches غَليلَburning thirst الساخِطِthe wrathful الحانِقِthe enraged
Can anything but a torrent of gushing blood
Is there naught but a torrent of spilling blood
quench the burning thirst of the wrathful, enraged?
To quench the burning thirst of the wrathful?
أَمor غَيرَanything other than لَألاءِthe gleam الظِباthe sword blades وَالقَناand the spears
يُزيلُdispels مِنfrom قَلبيmy heart دُجىthe darkness الغاسِقِِthe dark night
Or anything but the gleam of sword blades and spears
Or naught but the saliva of vipers and snakes
dispel from my heart the darkness of night?
To dispel the gloom from my heart?
I have come to hate ذاthis العالِمَthe world هَلis there ...? مَأبَقٌa place of escape
فيin عالَمٍa world آخَرَanother لِلآبِقِfor the fugitive
I have come to hate this world—is there a refuge
I’ve come to hate this world. Is there no refuge
in another world for the fugitive?
In another world for the fleeing?
ضاقَتgrew narrow بِيَfor me الدُنياthe world وَإِنّيand indeed I بِهاin it
أَضيَقُmore constricted ياO ليfor me مِنof فَتىًa youth ضائِقِdistressed
The world has grown narrow for me, and I in it
Life has grown narrow for me, and I
am more constricted still—alas, what a distressed youth I am!
Am narrower in it than a squeezed lad.
روحِيَmy soul عِبءٌa burden مُثقِلٌweighing down عاتِقيmy shoulder
أَيّانَwhen أَلقِىI cast العِبءَthe burden عَنoff عاتِقيmy shoulder
My soul is a burden weighing down my shoulder.
My soul is a burden heavy on my shoulders.
When shall I cast the burden off my shoulder?
When will I cast off the burden from my shoulders?
تَغلوis dear عَلىto الناسِpeople وَلكِنَّنيbut I
أَبيعُهاI sell it لِلنّاسِto the people بِالدافِقِfor gushing blood
It is dear to people, but I
They wrong people, but I sell to people with honesty.
sell it to them for gushing blood.
When will I be under the soil's dust
مَتىwhen أَرانيI see myself بِتُّI spent the night طَيَّin the folds of الثَرىthe earth
يَسحَقُنيcrushes me بِالكَلكَلِwith the breast الساحِقِcrushing
When shall I see myself pass the night in the folds of the earth,
Grinding me with merciless shackles?
as it crushes me with its crushing breast,
And close my eyes to a world
وَأَغمِضُand I close العَينَينِboth eyes عَنto عالَمٍa world
لاnot يَعتَلىrises فيهِin it سِوىexcept الفاسِقِthe wicked
and close my eyes to a world
Where none prospers except the wicked;
where none but the wicked rise?
Where the liar gains his wishes
يَحظىis favored بِهِin it الكَذّابُthe liar بِالمُشتَهىwith what he desires
وَالتَعسُand misery لِلمُخلِصِfor the sincere وَالصادِقِand the truthful
There the liar gains what he desires,
While misery is reserved for the truthful and honest;
and misery falls to the sincere and truthful.
Where welfare and bread have become
الخَيرُgood things وَالخُبزُand bread غَداhave become حِكرَةًa monopoly
لِبَعضِهِمfor some of them وَالوَيلُand woe لِلسّارِقِto the thief
Good things and bread have become a monopoly
A monopoly for some, while woe to the thief;
for some of them—and woe to the thief!
They have created the thief out of need,
هُمthey أَوجَدواcreated السارِقَthe thief مِنout of حاجَةٍneed
وَقيلَand it was said هذيthis قِسمَةُallotment الخالِقِthe Creator
They themselves created the thief out of need,
Yet it is said this is the Just Almighty's portioning.
and it was said, 'This is the Creator's allotment.'
O logic that has not been watered from a mind -
ياO مَنطِقاًreasoning لَمnot يُروَwas reported عَنfrom عاقِلٍa rational person
العَيُّinarticulacy خَيرٌbetter مِنهُthan it لِلنّاطِقِfor the speaker
O reasoning never heard from anyone sane—
Dumbness is better than speaking to the idiot.
being tongue-tied is better than this for a speaker!
Justice has been erased, so there is no justice;
قَدindeed مُحِقَwas annihilated العَدلُjustice فَلاso no عادِلٌjust person
أَماis there not ...? لِأَهلِfor the people of الأَرضِthe earth مِنany ماحِقِannihilator
Justice has been annihilated, so no just person remains.
Is there no destroyer for the people of the earth?
Is there no one to annihilate the people of the earth?
When will I see right and its people
مَتىwhen أَرىI see الحَقَّright وَأَصحابَهُand its supporters
يَعلونَrise مِنfrom أَدنىthe lowest place إِلىto شاهِقِa towering height
When shall I see right and its champions
Ascending from the lowest to the highest places?
rise from the lowest place to a towering height,
And see wrong and its people
وَأُبصِرُand I behold الشَرَّevil وَأَربابَهُand its masters
يَهوونَplunge مِنfrom أَعلىthe highest place إِلىto ساحِقِa deep abyss
and behold evil and its masters
Plunging from the highest to the grinding.
plunge from the highest place into a deep abyss?
