وَأَلقيand I shall cast بِهاit فيinto مَهاويthe abysses of الرَّدىdeath
I shall carry my soul upon my palm,
And cast it into the abysses of death.

Then either a life that gladdens a friend,
Or a death that enrages the foes.

وُرودُencountering المَناياdeath's fates وَنَيلُand attaining المُنىwishes
And the noble soul has two aims:
To meet death and attain one's wishes.
وَماand what is العَيشُlife لاmay you never عِشتَlive إِنif لَمnot أَكُنI am

فَخَوفَso fear; likely intended: 'feared' الجِنابِthe precinct حَرامَinviolable الحِمىthe sanctuary
And what is life—may you never live!—if I am not
[Feared] in my domain, with my sanctuary inviolate?

When I speak, the world's people listen to me,
And my words resound among humankind.

By your life, I see my death,
And yet I quicken my steps toward it.

I see my death in defense of my stolen right,
And in defense of my country, as the goal I seek.

يَهيِّجُstirs نَفسيmy soul مَسيلُthe flowing of الدِّماblood
Hearing the clash of steel delights my ear;
The flow of blood stirs my soul.
وَجِسمٌand a body تَجَدَّلَlay fallen فَوقَupon الهِضابِthe hills

And a body, felled upon the hills,
The raptors of the wilderness tear at it.

So a share of it goes to the lions of the sky,
And a share of it to the lions of al-Shara.

His blood clothed the earth in crimson,
And made the east wind heavy with fragrance.

Yet a dusting that adds to its splendor.

[And he slept] to dream the dream of immortality,
And enjoy within it the sweetest visions.
لَعُمرُكَby your life هذاthis مَماتُthe death of الرِجالِmen

And whoever seeks an honorable death—this is it.
فَكَيفَso how اِصطِباريmy patient endurance لِكَيدِof the scheming of الحُقودِthe spiteful one
وَكَيفَand how اِحتِماليmy endurance لِسومِof the infliction of الأَذىharm
How, then, can I endure the spiteful one's scheming?
And how can I bear the infliction of harm?
أَخَوفاًout of fear? وَعِنديwhile, to me تَهونُis of little worth الحَياةُlife
وَذُلّاًand in humiliation? وَإِنّيwhile I am indeed لَرَبُّsurely the master of الإِباdefiance
Out of fear, when life is cheap to me?
And in humiliation, when I am the very master of defiance?
بِقَلبيwith my heart سَأَرميI shall hurl وُجوهَthe faces of العُداةthe enemies

I shall hurl my heart at the enemies' faces,
And my heart is iron, and my fire a blaze.

And I shall defend my watering pools with the sword's edge,
So my people will know that I am the valiant youth.
