Set aside the marvel of song.

Hopes have dried upon my lip.

    Orpheus cannot

    Lull my heart for me.

    Pass around the brimming cups,

And leave the third and second strings.

    لا أَرتَوي بِسِوى الدِنانِ

    Rather, give me wine by the jar;

Nothing but wine-jars quenches my thirst.

Bring it, give me a cup, that I may

Forget, upon your earth, what I am.

Bring it, give me drink, until I

Soar from my sky into the clouds.

    And flee from time’s snare

And from the entanglements of place.

    I climb the radiant light

Toward stars that gaze upon me.

I am from there, from heaven—

So who cast me onto this world?

    Who defiled pure holiness,

And debased the chaste and virtuous?

    قاءِ كَأسُكَ ما رَواني

    Or give me drink from the blue dome;

Your cup has not quenched my thirst.

    سِ فَما أَفادَ وَما شَفاني

    It is from the dust of lowly soil;

And has neither helped nor healed me.

And I see it has not awakened in my heart

    Any of my fading hopes.

It brought some far-off pain near,

    And squandered my near-at-hand dreams.

Bring it, give me drink, and make the cups

Of wine the mouths of beautiful women,

That I may taste it blended

With love’s fragrance and traces of tenderness.

Or give me that wine in eyes

    That inspire meanings in me;

Or in white throats that entice

    Above supple boughs;

    Or in lush rosebuds,

    Or the mouths of chrysanthemums.

    These are vessels, and beauty

Is enhanced by the loveliness of vessels.

And wine is a spirit; nothing unveils it

    But the beauty of forms.

Bring it, give me drink, and loosen with your wine

A knot that has bound my tongue.

Indeed, I find myself, if I thirst,

    For wine, tongue-tied in speech.

My lip and your cup are two lovers,

    Conversing about love.

    They won from treacherous time

Wishes, and spent the night in union.

My heart’s beats and the bubbles

Lament to each other love’s anguish.

Bring it, give me a cup, that I may drown

In it the heaviest of my suffering.

My body and my soul, in a blaze

    Everlasting, burn fiercely.

The cup reveals to me what

It reveals; so comfort me with a second.

So there may spread through my sorrowing heart

Visions it has long hoped for.

    Quench my thirst, for indeed

Hopes have dried upon my lip.
